Savannah State Picked To Finish Second In SIAC

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Coming off another successful season, the Savannah State women's basketball team hopes to continue their winning ways during the 2023-24 campaign as the were picked to finish second in the Eastern Division of the conference as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) held their Basketball Media Day at EnMarket Arena on October 17.
The Lady Tigers were picked to finish behind Clark Atlanta.
Behind SSU in the SIAC East is Benedict, Edward Waters, Allen, Albany State and Fort Valley State.
Miles is predicted to win the SIAC Western Division followed by Tuskegee, Kentucky State, Lane, Central State, LeMoyne-Owen and Spring Hill. The preseason rankings are voted on by the SIAC head coaches and sports information directors.
SSU split their season series with Clark Atlanta last season, losing 70-63 on January 16 in Atlanta and winning 53-51 on February 4 at Tiger Arena. Savannah State finished last season with a 17-8 overall record and a 13-6 conference mark and was ranked 10th in the Division II South regional rankings.
SSU, who had a 9-1 home record a year ago, earned a second seed along with a first round bye in the SIAC Tournament. The Lady Tigers lost to Edward Waters in the quarterfinals 63-62.
Cedric Baker, who will be starting his 29th year as a head coach, has 397 career wins and needs four more to reach 400. The Columbus, Georgia native has been the head coach at SSU since 2003 and has won 208 games for the Orange & Blue. Savannah State tips off the regular season on November 17 by hosting Trinity. They will play Division II newcomer USC-Beaufort on Nov. 21 in Savannah's EnMarket Arena as part of the Savannah Hoops Invitational. The Lady Tigers will start a three-game home stand on Nov. 25 with contests against Kentucky State, Central State (Nov. 27) and Georgia Southwestern (December 2).
