Volleyball Fall Camp Report: 'Eyes On The SIAC'

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Head Volleyball Coach Roselidah Obunaga began her four season this week with the opening of fall camp.

Over the last three years, Obunaga has gradually improved the volleyball program, earning two Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship bids and two of the best overall records for the program since 2009.

This year, Obunaga has a squad that is exactly half returners and half newcomers. As fall camp gets underway, she's been evaluating each position with an eye towards who her starters will be.

For the first week of fall camp, prior to the start of classes on August 15, Obunaga has been running drills in practice and shuffling around players, testing rotations and evaluating individual positions.

In the returning class, she has some solid players. Sophomore outside/right side hitter Jasmine Nettles, who played in 23 matches last season and ranked in the top five in kills, will definitely play a large role on the team this year.

Destinee Langston, the junior outside/right side hitter, returns to the team this year. She recorded 125 kills last year and was named the SIAC Newcomer of the Week for the week of Sept. 21.

Anchoring the setter position will be returning sophomore Caylen Samuel who will be assisted by junior Sydney Harville. Behind them, newcomer Jessee Grubesic will also be a key element at the setter position.

Destinee Gaines returns for her sophomore season at the middle hitter position and will be backed up by freshman Allena Norton.

At libero, sophomore Kloe Ludy returns to the position. Ludy led the team in digs last season with 372, playing in all 25 matches and starting 85 sets.
Heading into the program's third full season of competition in the SIAC, Obunaga is gearing up for a deeper post-season run.

In the last two bids (2019 and 2021), the Lady Tigers earned the No. 4 spot in the SIAC East which draws the No. 1 seed of the SIAC West for game one of the championship.

The No. 1 seed out of the SIAC West is typically Spring Hill. And playing the SIAC perennial powerhouse—who won the last three SIAC Women's Volleyball Championships—is not an advantageous way to open the tournament.

This year, Obunaga's goal is to improve the regular season SIAC wins/loss record in order to grab a higher seed into the post-season and hopefully not start the tournament against the reigning champions.

"This year I am really pushing to be one of the top four schools in the SIAC and then we can see what the championship brings," Obunaga said. "That puts you in a good position.

"My biggest challenge is always not knowing what the other teams has. You may feel comfortable, then you go out there and find they have some good starters. Then it comes down to how you execute your plays and how to outsmart them. Right now, I think I have a really good squad."
