Women's Tennis Named To ITA All-Academic Team

Six Lady Tigers Named 2022 ITA Scholar-Athletes

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Following one of the most successful athletic seasons in over two decades for the Savannah State women's tennis team, the program added academic accolades to their award portfolio this week.

The Savannah State women's tennis team was named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) All-Academic Team list which features 110 NCAA Division II programs. Each team had to maintain at least a 3.5 team grade point average for the last academic year to be eligible. The Lady Tigers finished with a team GPA of 3.75 for the 2021-2022 academic year.

In addition, Bria Bembery, Sarah Joachim, Sunzahra Banks, Julia Bentham, Caitlyn Schultz and Venus Ubiebi were named to the ITA Scholar-Athlete Team for maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA.

The Lady Tigers finished runner-up at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship, closing a remarkable run with a 14-7 overall record—the best finish for the program since the 1998 team won an SIAC Championship.

Originally founded in 1956 by the legendary UCLA men's tennis coach, J. D. Morgan, ITA is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at all levels – NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College.
