Softball Heads To SIAC Championship As No. 3 Seed

ALBANY, Ga. – Savannah State softball will play in the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship as the No. 3 seed out of the SIAC East Division.

Savannah State will open the tournament on Thursday, May 5, at noon against Spring Hill, the No. 2 seed out of the West Division.

The Lady Tigers concluded the regular season 13-16 overall and 8-10 in conference to earn their post-season bid.

The double elimination tournament continues Friday and Saturday on the campus of Albany State University in Albany, Georgia.

A win for Savannah State on Thursday will see them play in game eight at 1 p.m. on Friday. A loss on Thursday will see the Lady Tigers play at 10 a.m. in game six on Friday.

Out of the SIAC East Division, Albany State took the No. 1 seed, followed by Benedict. Fort Valley State earned the No. 4 seed. Tuskegee earned the No. 1 seed out of the SIAC West Division, followed by Spring Hill, Kentucky State and Miles.

This will be the first SIAC Championship trip for Savannah State after the school rejoined the conference ahead of the 2019-2020 season. Despite being in the conference for three years, the softball program has yet to compete for a championship due to the pandemic shutting down the 2020 and 2021 spring championship seasons.

Since the softball program's inception in 2000, the Lady Tigers have only competed in one conference, The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) as an NCAA Division I program. They won a regular season divisional title in 2012.
