Gabrielle Benn Named SIAC Women’s Tennis Player Of The Year

Three Lady Tigers Named SIAC All-Conference

ATLANTA, Ga. – Gabrielle Benn has been named the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year, according to a press release from the conference office Saturday morning.

Benn, in her first year at Savannah State, finished the regular season 11-2 in the first court of singles action. Against SIAC opponents in single's play, she was undefeated (8-0).

In the first court of doubles, Benn teamed up with her sister Amarlia this season finishing 7-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

The Benn sisters along with Julia Ramos Bentham were all named to the 2022 SIAC All-Conference list.

Amarlia Benn finished 6-2 in conference action, playing in the second and third courts of singles. Bentham finished 5-2 against SIAC opponents in the third and second court of singles.

Savannah State wrapped up an historic regular season last week, finishing 13-6 overall—the first winning season for the program in over two decades. They earned the No. 3 seed into the 2022 SIAC Championship with an 11-3 conference record.

The announcement comes just before the opening of the 2022 SIAC Women's Tennis Championship in Peachtree City, Ga. Savannah State faces Albany State, the No. 2 seed, on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a semifinals match.

A win against Albany State—who they are 1-1 against this season—will send them to the finals against the winner of a match between No. 1 Benedict and No. 4 Clark Atlanta. A loss will put them into contention for a third place finish in a consolation match on Sunday.
