Women’s Tennis Heads To SIAC Championship

Lady Tigers Earn First Winning Season, Post-Season Bid In Two Decades

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State women's tennis finished an historic regular season last week en-route to earning the first post-season bid for the program in over two decades.

The Lady Tigers finished the regular season with an 11-3 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) record, earning the No. 3 seed into the 2022 SIAC Women's Tennis Championship.

For the first time in over two-decades, Savannah State women's tennis finished the regular season with a winning record at 13-6. The last best women's tennis team was the 1998 squad who won the program's fifth SIAC Women's Tennis Championship that year during the school's first tenure in the conference.

Savannah State will face No. 2 Albany State on Saturday at 1 p.m. A win against Albany State in the semifinals will send them to the finals against the winner of a match with No. 1 seed Benedict and No. 4 seed Clark Atlanta. A loss, will put them into contention for a third place finish in a consolation match on Sunday.

The SIAC Women's Tennis Championship is comprised of the top four teams in the conference, who are seeded according to their regular season conference records.

The Lady Tigers incredible run in the conference schedule concluded with a 7-1 mark at the second SIAC Roundup. After falling to Benedict, they beat Tuskegee, LeMoyne-Owen, Spring Hill, Fort Valley State twice, Clark Atlanta and Albany State.

Representing the Lady Tigers in the first court of singles on Saturday will be Gabrielle Benn who concluded the regular season undefeated in conference single's court play. Julia Ramos Bentham will play in the second court of singles, while Amarlia Benn will field the third court. Caitlyn Schultz, Venus Ubiebi, Sunzahra Banks, Bria Bembery and Sarah Joachim will round out Savannah State's lineup.
