Track Tigers Set Records At SIAC Outdoor Championship

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State outdoor men's track and field team competed at the 2022 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship this past weekend on the campus of Winthrop University.

Six Tigers set new personal best records in their individual events. Freshman Winfred Porter led Savannah State on the track.

In the 100m final, Porter ran a new personal best of 10.53 to finish in third place. The effort also earned him an NCAA Division II provisional mark. Porter also set a new personal best in the 200m dash final, running a 21.63 for a fifth place finish.

Senior Andre Valcin set a new personal best in the 400m final, finishing runner-up with a time of 48.25.

Nyzaveon Thompson had a strong outing in hurdles. Thompson set a new personal best in the 110m hurdle preliminary race, finishing runner-up with a time of 15.00. He finished second in the final race of the event with a time of 15.19.

In the 400m hurdles, Thompson ran a 54.68 in the finals to set a new personal best, finishing in fourth place. In the finals, he shaved a full two seconds off his preliminary time of 56.01 in the event.

Porter, Valcin, Kenneth Cherry and Solomon Mitchell teamed up for the 4x100 relay, finishing fifth in the finals with a time of 41.88. They finished fourth in the prelims with a time of 41.74.

Valcin, Thompson, Kelvin Jackson and Daniel Ogunderu ran a 3:22.99 to finish sixth in the 4x100m relay.

In field events, Daeshaun Logan finished runner-up in the high jump with a 1.95m effort. Mitchell recorded a mark of 6.18 meters in the long jump event, finishing in 11th place. Mitchell also recorded a 12.93m effort in the triple jump to finish seventh overall.

Tony Roundtree—who doubles his efforts at Savannah State as a defensive tackle for the football team— set a new personal best in the shot put event. Roundtree recorded a 13.07m toss, finishing in fourth place. Jamaal McKinney finished just behind him with a 12.65m toss.

McKinney set a new personal best in the discus event with 31.43m effort. Roundtree finished ninth in the event with a 35.83m toss.

Braxton Chadwick—who also doubles at Savannah State as a specialist for the football team—set a new personal best in the hammer throw with a 40.41m toss, finishing in fourth place. Chadwick recorded a 32.43m throw in the javelin event as well.

The Tigers will run at Georgia Southern Spring Classic on April 30 as several student-athletes attempt to qualify for the 2022 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
