Cedric Baker Named SIAC Coach of the Year

Gibbs Named To First Team All-SIAC; Gillis Named To Second Team All-SIAC

ATLANTA, Ga. – Savannah State head women's basketball coach Cedric Baker has been named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Coach of the Year, the conference office announced on Sunday.

Baker, in his 19th season at Savannah State, led his team to a nearly unblemished historic regular season record of 25-1 with a 14-1 SIAC record.

This year's team set a new school record for most consecutive wins to open a season, 14-0, and tied the school record for most regular season wins with the 1977-78 team. They've also earned the highest ranking in program history, hitting No. 12 in the WBCA Coaches Poll last week.

Baker's Lady Tigers claimed the SIAC East Division Title this season and the No. 1 seed out of the division heading into the 2022 SIAC Championship Tournament scheduled for next week.

Over his nearly two decade career, Baker has led the Savannah State women's basketball program to several winning seasons and coached one of the schools most decorated players, Olympian Ezinne Kalu. Overall, Baker is 24-8 in SIAC play after the school returned to the conference in the 2019-2020 season. Through his long career, Baker has an overall record of 239-126 in NCAA Division II action.

Savannah State junior Bria Gibbs was named to the All-SIAC First Team as well on Sunday. A Division I transfer, Gibbs has been a force for Savannah State this year on both sides of the court.

Gibbs leads the team in double-doubles with eight on the season, averaging 8.2 rebounds a game and 13.6 points a game. She leads the SIAC in field-goal percentage (58%), is ranked No. 7 in defensive rebounds per game (5.0), and No. 5 in rebounds per game.

Senior Le'Andrea Gillis was named the All-SIAC Second Team. Over her career at Savannah State, Gillis has emerged as one of the most impactful players in school history.

This year, Gillis has led the scoring effort from the beginning. She is averaging 14.5 points a game, and tops the stats in steals (38) and assists (38). She is shooting 45 percent from the floor and 44 percent from beyond the arc. She's ranked fourth in the SIAC in field goals made (119), second in free-throw percentage (86%) and first in three-point field goal percentage (46%).

Gillis currently has 1,078 career points as a Lady Tiger and is only the second player in modern program history to eclipse the 1,000 point milestone—the other being Kalu who finished with 2,119 career points.

Savannah State women's basketball will open the 2022 SIAC Championship with a first round bye. They play their first game of the tournament on Wednesday, March 2 at 12 p.m. against the winner of a first-round game between LeMoyne-Owen College and Fort Valley State.
