Golf Teams Open 2023-23 Season At SAS HBCU Invite

CARY, N.C. – Savannah State men's and women's golf opened the 2022-23 season this past weekend at the inaugural SAS HBCU Championship Invitational.
 
The Tigers finished fourth overall in the men's NCAA Division II bracket. After opening with a team round of 306, the Tigers gradually improved over the final two rounds, shooting a 289 in round two and finishing under par with a 279 in round three.
 
Senior Nicolas Macsuga led Savannah State in the individual bracket, shooting a one-under-par 209 (71, 70, 68) over the three rounds. Fifth year senior Korbin Allan tied for sixth place, shooting a four over 214 (78, 70, 66).
 
Lucas Parisi shot a three round total of 225 (79, 73, 73) followed by freshman Jaden Saunders (226: 78, 76, 72), and Mark Greene (246: 83, 84, 79).
 
Miles' Phillip Darst won individual medalist honors, finishing six-under par (204), behind a tournament low of 63 in the third round.
 
Miles College won team honors with a three-round combined score of 853 (295, 286, 272), followed by Virginia Union (868), and Livingstone College (869). Winston-Salem Sate (938) finished fifth followed by Johnson C. Smith (961).
 
Savannah State women's golf closed out the three-round tournament in fourth place with a team score of 1123 (380, 372, 371).
 
Sophomore Miracle Goolsby led the Lady Tigers with a 259 (87, 89, 83) followed by junior Ja'Davia McCallum (262: 86, 80, 96).
 
Newcomers Sydney Barnum (300) and Angela Dodson (302) followed the veterans. Kaila Leonard (433) rounded out the scoring for Savannah State.
 
Howard's Kendall Jackson earned individual medalist honors in the women's division, shooting a 212 (67, 74, 71. Howard won the women's side with a team score of 862 (292, 285, 285), followed by N.C. Central (958) and Prairie View A&M (997).
 
The three-round, par-70 tournament was played at Prestonwood Country Club in Cary, N.C. over two days.
 
Savannah State men's and women's golf will play in one more fall tournament, before breaking for winter. They travel to Bluefield, Virginia to compete in the Bluefield State Invite Oct. 23-Oct. 25.
