Golf Teams Ready For A New Season

Savannah, Ga. – Savannah State University senior Nicholas Macsuga wouldn't equate the collegiate fall golf season to NFL exhibition play.

Yes, golf is a spring sport, but …

"The fall can be a chance to analyze your game," said Macsuga, who worked with a swing coach during the summer. "We'll play tournaments and they'll give you the opportunity to say, "Under pressure, I did that." Everything matters. (Fall) tournaments still matter."

The Savannah State men's and women's team began practice on Aug. 29. Both teams will tee off their fall season Oct. 14 at the SAS HBCU Invitational in Cary, N.C.

"While we're technically a spring sport, we do play all year long," said Head Golf Coach Christopher Miller, whose men and women will play in two fall tournaments.

Fall tournaments count toward the minimum of six contests that must be played during the entire school year for the program to be eligible for NCAA sponsorship. A minimum of four tournaments must be played in the spring.

Regardless of the number of days during a tournament (1, 2 or 3 days), each tournament is counted as one. Golfers can participate in a maximum of 21 dates throughout the school year.

Miller says he's excited to get going with the first part of the golf year. "I'm over the moon for both teams," Miller said. "All of the players have the game to shoot well in tournament play and I love the vibe and how they get along."

There are 17 players – 10 men and seven women – in the programs. Savannah State's men will return Korbin Allan, who will take advantage of his fifth year of eligibility.

Allan had a 3.94 grade-point average – the best in his graduating class – while earning a degree in biology. He was named the top undergraduate of the 2022 class in May. On the golf course, he had three top-10 finishes, was medalist at the Alabama Spring Classic and earned the SIAC's Golfer of the Month in March.

Macsuga also had three top-10 finishes and ended the spring on a high note by placing a team-best 10th at the highly regarded PGA Works Championship in Philadelphia.

"Those two, Allan and Macsuga, I've challenged to take their low rounds in practice and bring them to the tournaments," Miller said.

Miller had another request of Macsuga – take on the role of team captain.

"When (Miller) asked me into the room, I started thinking the worst – maybe my average was too low and they were taking away my scholarship," Macsuga said. "But he needed some help because his assistant (Kayla Jones) was leaving. I feel like it's a great honor."

Miller said the men's team will be experienced with five others returning – Kaleb Dawson, Mark Greene, Todd Norman, Lucas Parisi and Devin Smith.
Sophomore transfer Jaden Saunders from Point University adds another proven golfer who will be competing for playing time. Saunders tied for 40th with a four-round 8-over 292 at the NAIA Championships last spring.

Joe Moore and true freshman John Huffman round out the newcomers.

The Tigers will prepare this fall as they drive towards the 2023 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship in April.

On the women's side, the Lady Tigers will be preparing to chase a conference crown at the 2023 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship, also set for April. Last year, the program competed for a conference title for the first time since its inception after joining the PBC in 2021.

Senior Ja'Davia McCallum returns and will serve as the team captain. Newcomers Sydney Barnum and Angela Dodson will be players to watch.

Junior Miracle Goolsby returns with the best story of her summer. Miller said she had a two-week paid internship at the Brookline Country Club in Massachusetts – the site of this year's U.S. Open.

"We consistently look for opportunities to put these players in front of influential people," Miller said. "We want to show them there are opportunities in the industry."
