SAVANNAH, Ga.— Savannah State women's basketball will play the first game of the new year today after opening the season with one of the best starts in program history.
The 9-0 Lady Tigers were scheduled to play two road games last week, but both were postponed and rescheduled due to COVID protocols. Today, they host Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division foe Lane College in a rematch.
Savannah State and Lane first met on Nov 30 in Jackson, Tennessee. Savannah State cruised to a 66-58 win in that game behind a strong opening quarter. Since that loss, Lane has picked up key victories against SIAC East Division powerhouse Benedict, as well as Albany State and Clark Atlanta.
Savannah State's 9-0, 4-0 SIAC opening this season is the best in program history since the 1992-93 team opened 11-0.
The Lady Tigers are currently ranked No. 2 in the SIAC East Division, trailing Benedict College. Lane is also ranked No 2 in the SIAC West Division, trailing Tuskegee.
The Tigers will celebrate Healthcare Appreciation Day at today's doubleheader. All healthcare workers will receive a discount on tickets at the door with proper ID.

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Savannah State men's basketball team plays their first home game of the new year following two big Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) road wins last week.
The Tigers moved into second place in the SIAC East Division with a 75-70 win over Spring Hill followed by a 62-59 win against Tuskegee. Following a rough 1-5 start to the season, Savannah State has improved to 5-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
They face a Lane College team on a three-game losing streak today. The Dragons fell to Benedict, Morehouse and Albany State in their last three games. Against Benedict, the No. 1 team in the SIAC East, they were bested by only three points 54-51.
Savannah State got a spark in the last few games thanks to the return of Avery Joyner, who became eligible just ahead of the spring semester. After playing in only three games, Joyner now leads the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points.
Trey DeLoach and Marcus Scott are both having great years as well, each averaging over 12 points a game.
