Tigers Finish Third, Lady Tigers Seventh In PGA Works Championship

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Savannah State men's and women's golf teams spent the week walking the same ground as legends of the game, fighting for a championship just as they did.

TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship, played host to the 34th annual PGA Works Collegiate Championship this week. The 56-hole, three-round, stroke-play championship played out over three days on two separate courses—Dyes Valley Course and the Players Stadium.

On Wednesday morning, Savannah State men's golf was only 10 strokes behind the leaders in the NCAA Division II bracket, after shooting a 317 in round one and a 332 in round two.

Despite having a better team outing, shooting 325 in round three, the Tigers were unable to make up the deficit as Miles College pulled away with a 308 to win bracket with a three-day total of 947.

Livingstone College finished second with a 968. Bluefield State finished fourth with a 998 followed by Kentucky State (1000) and Lincoln (1007).
In the men's individual race, sophomore Nicolas Macsuaga was chasing the top of the leader board for two rounds, finishing Tuesday tied for second place.

Behind a couple of birdies on the front nine, Macsuga was +3 at the turn on Wednesday. But a double bogey and two bogey's on the last three holes dropped him out of contention. He finished sixth overall with a three-round total of 236 (76, 79, 81).

Trey Odom finished tied for ninth place after carding a 242 (79, 81, 82). Jacob Cunningham improved vastly in round three. Following an 80 and 90 in the opening rounds, he carded 13 pars and a birdie to shoot 77 in round three. He finished with a 247 overall to finish 16th.

Freshman Lucas Parisi improved on his second round 90, shooting an 85 in round three, for a total score of 260. Korbin Allan finished with a 263 (82, 82, 99), following a rough final round.

Texas A&M Corpus Christi won the bracket with a 928, followed by Delaware State (956), Texas A&M Kingsville (984), Alabama State (991), North Carolina A&T (1005), and Prairie View A&M (1012). Lincoln finished in eighth with a 1028.

Ja'Davia McCallum led the Lady Tigers. She opened with a 76 in round one, then faltered in round two, scoring a 91. On Wednesday, she rebounded, carding 11 pars and a birdie to score a 77. She finished in 13th place with a 244. Kayla Jones shot a 254 (84, 86, 84), followed by Rebekka Davis with a 256 (82, 90, 84), Alyssa Clements (261) and Miracle Gooslby (289).

Savannah State men's and women's golf close out the 2021 spring season with the PGA Works Championship.

ABOUT PGA WORKS
The PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship (formerly known as the National Minority College Championship) originated at a meeting in November 1986, following the Jackson State University Golf Tournament. The founders' goal was to elevate the game at minority colleges and universities by providing student-athletes with the opportunity to compete on a championship stage during an era when they were excluded from playing in many collegiate golf events.
The inaugural Championship was conducted in the spring of 1987 at Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland. Since 1998, PGA Golf Club has hosted the Championship, and in 2006 the PGA of America was granted complete ownership and management of the Championship by the National Minority College Golf Scholarship Fund. In 2019, PGA REACH, the 501(c)3 foundation of the PGA of America, assumed ownership of the Championship from the PGA of America.
