Softball Takes Two In Three-Game Series With Fort Valley State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 FORT VALLEY, Ga. – It was a wild weekend for Savannah State softball as they battled Fort Valley State and the weather to get three games of what was supposed to be a four-game series in.

The Lady Tigers walked away with two victories and a lop-sided loss in the series, midway through the 2021 season.

In game one, Savannah State hit the lights out. They racked up seven runs on eight hits in the first three innings but went scoreless through the remainder four innings. The early runs were enough as Fort Valley only managed four in the last two innings. The Lady Tigers ended game one with a 7-4 victory behind 12 hits and some stellar pitching.

Alisyn Ferrel picked up her second win of the season after seven full innings of work in the circle. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts after facing 36 batters. M. Johnson led the Lady Tigers at the plate with three hits. Shayna Byers added two in the win.

Game two on Saturday opened normal enough. Fort Valley went up 1-0 in the second inning. But before the Lady Tigers could bat in the third, a sudden rainstorm halted play. With the washout, the game was pushed to Sunday morning. When play resumed, Savannah State scored a single run on one hit to tie the game.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, JaNesa Robinson tripled to left field to reach. Kameryn Baker reached on a single that scored Robinson. Williams singled and pushed Baker to scoring position. Baker would later steal home to lift Savannah to a 3-1 lead. The final two innings finished scoreless as Savannah State sealed up their second win of the series.

Savannah State and Fort Valley were scheduled to play both games in a doubleheader on Sunday, as well as finish the game from Saturday. Fort Valley opened the doubleheader—technically the second game on Sunday—scoring 13 runs in the first two innings on 8 runs following three costly errors from Savannah State. The Lady Tigers notched up three runs in the top of the first and added two more in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to escape the run-rule—plus eight or more runs after five innings of play.

Fort Valley took the game with a 13-5 run-rule victory in the fifth. The teams played three innings of game two before another storm halted play and eventually cancelled the game all together. Since they didn't play at least five innings, the second game did not count.

Savannah State travels up the road a bit to face the College of Coastal Georgia on March 31. They head to Atlanta for a four-game series with Clark Atlanta on April 10 and 11.
