Track Tigers Open 2021 Outdoor Season With Several New Records

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2021 outdoor season on Saturday playing host to the annual Savannah State Eyeopener at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

The Tigers finished second place overall with a team score of 223. The Lady Tigers also finished second overall with a team score of 219. The final tally included scoring from 35 events and a field of 11 teams.

Benedict College won the overall meet on the men's side with a team score of 251 and on the women's side with a team score of 251. Clayton State finished third, followed by Albany State, Bryant & Stratton, Piedmont, Dalton State, Edward Waters, Francis Marion, USC-Beaufort and Morris College.
Several Lady Tigers set personal records during their first outdoor meet of the season.

In the women's long jump, Sadrea Mabry led the Lady Tigers with a third place finish and a personal best 5.37m jump. Da'Aliyah Johnson finished in fifth with a 5.22m leap. Johnson won the triple jump with an 11.15m leap.

Jahvene Walder won the high jump event with a 1.62m effort, followed by Toni Pellington who finished second with a 1.57m jump.

On the track, Walder and Jaylen Swell led Savannah State in the 100m hurdles. Swell finished second with a time of 15.32 followed by Walder who finished with a 15.78 in third place.

In the 100m dash, Teauna Thomas ledSavannah State with a third place finish and a time of 12.99 followed by teammates Ravyn Cystrunk (13.20) and Sadrea Mabry (13.30). Cystrunk ran a 12.86 and Mabry recorded a 12.93 in the preliminaries of the 100m for new personal best records.

Kayla Chance set two personal records and claimed top brass in several events. Chance finished second in the 1500m with a personal best time of 5:03.27. In the 800m run, she finished third with a personal best 2:25.66.

Freshman Artexis Drake had a great start to her college career on Saturday. She finished second in the 400m dash with a personal best time of 59.14. In the 200m dash she was a tenth of a second off her personal best, finishing second with a time of 26.72. Cystrunk ran a 26.75 to finish third in the same event.

In the women's relay races, the Savannah State team of Johnson, Cystrunk, Thomas and Walder finished second in the 4x100 with a time of 48.38. In the 4x400 relay, Sewell, Simone Johnson, Cystrunk and Walder finished third with a time of 4:13.85.

On the men's side, freshman Solomon Mitchell had an outstanding opening to the outdoor season. Mitchell won the long jump event with a personal best leap of 6.99m. He finished third in the triple jump with a personal best 11.78m jump.

On the track, Tracy White won the 100m dash with a personal best 11.12 after qualifying with a time of 11.13. Anthony Johnson finished right behind him with a time of 11.29, followed by Jordan Davis (11.33).

Freshman Cameron McClendon finished third in the 1500m run with a personal best time of 4:33.52.  In the 800m run, Narhmarty Djangmah finished third with a time of 2:00.37.

In the 400m dash, senior Andre Valcin finished third with a time of 50.27. Valcin led the Tigers in the 200m dash with a second place finished and a time of 23.12, followed by White (23.12), Johnson (23.25) and Davis (23.95). Anthony Tuggle finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.99.

The men's relay team of Johnson, Joseph Bell, Davis and White won the 4x100 event with a time of 41.98. The team of Valcin, Nartmartey, Bell and White finished fifth in the 4x400 with a time of 3:46.52.

Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams continue the season with another home meet, the Savannah State Relays, on March 6 at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

Due to a mandate from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), the meet will be closed to spectators.
