Kayla Chance Claims SIAC Women’s Cross Country Title

Title Gives Savannah State First SIAC Championship Since Rejoining

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Savannah State cross country runner Kayla Chance capped an excellent season with a dominating performance at the 2021 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Championship Friday morning at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Chance ran a 19:29.0 in the SIAC Championship 5k Friday morning to claim the 2021 SIAC women's cross country individual title. She was named the 2021 SIAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year for her performance. Mary Shelton of Spring Hill finished in second in the individual race with a time 19:56.5, followed by Benedict's Jane Kiborus (20:59.2).

Chance opened her cross country season by setting a new school record (18:47) in the 5k at the Queen City Invite in September. She was named the SIAC Women's Cross Country Runner Of The Week for the week of September 29 for her performance at the Queen City Invite.

The title is the first SIAC Championship for Savannah State Athletics since the Tigers rejoined NCAA Division II and the conference during the 2019 season. The Tigers competed in multiple sports within the SIAC from 1968 to 2000 before moving to NCAA Division I.

The Spring Hill women's cross country team claimed the overall team title with a total time of 1:46:9, placing four runners in the top 10 out of a field of 65. They were followed by Albany State (1:49:54), Benedict College (1:53:01), Fort Valley State (2:03:18) and Tuskegee (2:13:00). 

Coming in behind Chance, teammate Jasmine Williams finished with a time of 24:44.9, followed by Da'aliyah Johnson (26:22.1), and Jahvene Walder (29:10.0).

The Savannah State men's cross country team finished in sixth place in the team scoring with a time of 2:53:30. Benedict won the men's side, recording a time of 2:22:14. They were followed by Morehouse (2:28:08), Spring Hill (2:30:04), Fort Valley State (2:38:27) and Central State (2:50:50).

Freshman Josh Mitchell led Savannah State with a 14th place finish and a time of 29:46.6. He was followed by teammate Andre Vlacin (32:47.5), Kelvin Jackson (34:49.4), Myles Corey (35:43.2), Solomon Mitchell (40:23.5), and Anthony Tuggle (45:11.7).
