1

Women's Tennis | 6/10/2020 4:21:00 PM

Continuing our Inside the Tiger Den series, our new Meet the Team Q&A will introduce you to a number of Savannah State student-athletes over the course of the summer.

Carlissa Stewart | Junior | Savannah State Women's Tennis

What is an interesting fact about yourself?

I know how to body board and surf. I learned how to do this when I was 14 or 15 and it has been one of my favorite hobbies since then.

What is your nickname and how did you get it?

My nickname is Carly. My family from up north would use it because they would always get tongue tied when saying my name. It stuck with me and traveled back south with me.

What is something small that makes your day better?

Something small that makes my day better can be something as small as a "good morning" text or just going to the park or beach for a walk on a nice day with my dog and family.

Where is the most interesting place you've been?

The most interesting place I have been is Canada. I was able to visit Niagara Falls and ride the boat that takes you to the waterfall which was pretty amazing, even though I panicked the whole time.

Who inspires you and why?

There are a few people that I can say inspire me and that I look up to, but the person who stand out the most to me is my mom. She is very hard working and so considerate of others. She stays on top of her stuff and carries herself in a way that is respectable yet caring. She puts in the work so that I can receive the blessings and she always makes sure that I have everything that I need even if she has to go the extra mile to get it for me.

If you could make one rule that everyone had to follow, what rule would you make?

It would to be for everybody to get along with each other. I am a peaceful person that enjoys unity between individuals rather than chaos.

What would be some of the most annoying things about having YOURSELF as a roommate?

I blast loud music early in the morning to wake myself up which can be quite irritating. I love spending time with the girls, and we tend to get loud. Also, I enjoy singing out loud at the most random times and especially when it is absolutely quiet. And finally, I take very long showers.

Best advice anyone ever gave you?

Don't drop your beans trying to count how many the other person has. I know it may sound corny, but it simply means to not worry about how much more someone else has then you. Doing this can cause you to lose focus on what you do have.

What is your 2020 goal?

My goal for 2020 is to better myself as an individual whether that be growing as a student, athlete, daughter, or mentor. I want to stay focused on only the positive aspects of life and participate in activities that will further me in my progress to my life goals.

Why did you choose Savannah State?

I chose Savannah State because of the atmosphere that I was able to immediately pick up when I came to do a tour. It just seemed like an environment that would best fit my needs and the staff here were willing to help students progress to their goals while also teaching them life lessons.

Also, with me being a Marine Science major and Savannah State being the "University by the Sea" was a huge contribution to my decision. And most importantly, I wanted the HBCU experience that I heard everyone talk so well of.
