SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened the 2020 season on windy but clear and sunny day Saturday with the annual Tiger Relays.
In the field of 14 teams, Savannah State combined to finish in third place overall with 153 team points—a combination of the men's and women's scores. The University of North Carolina Wilmington won the day with a team score of 281. Piedmont finished second (203).
Following Savannah State was Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Central State (140). University of South Carolina Beaufort finished in fifth (102), followed by Voorhees (80), Brewton-Parker (67), Edward Waters (61), Tiger Track Club (46), Dalton State (39), Thomas University (35), Georgia College (16), Morris (14) and St. Andrews (12).
Ny'em Bozeman, who doubles at Savannah State as a defensive back for the football team, led the Tigers efforts on the track and field. Bozeman led the 4x200 meter relay team and along with
Kyce Gray,
Edward Musgrow and
Eric Jackson finished first with a time of 1:34.78.
The relay team of Bozeman,
Andre Valcin, Gray and Musgrow ran a 44.52 in the 4x100m relay to finish fourth.
Suheib Mohamed, Djangmah Nartmartey, Valcin and Roberts finished third in the 4x800m relay with a time of 8.28.08
The team of Nartmartey, Roberts, Tuggle and Mohamed ran a 11:17.09 to finish fourth in the distance medley.
Bozeman led the Tigers in the 100 meter dash, finishing in seventh with a time of 11.27, followed by Gracy (11.33) and Jackson (11.89).
Darryl Wiltz finished in second place in the 400m hurdles with a. time of 59.41, followed closely by teammate
Anthony Tuggle (1:02.57).
In the men's high jump, Bozeman finished in first place with a 1.96m effort. Â
Tracy Gaston, who played for the football squad last year, finished in 10
th in the long jump with a 5.95m effort.
Elsewhere in the field,
Ihsan Muhammed led the Tigers in the shot put with an 11.20m toss. Muhammed also led in the discus throw (29.83m), hammer throw (22.81m) and javelin (20.55m).
Savannah State men's and women's teams return to action next Saturday when they host the Savannah State Orange and Blue at Theodore A. Wright Stadium. Track events began at 11 a.m.
Outdoor track and field is an SIAC sponsored event and Savannah State will vie this season at the 2020 SIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The SIAC does not sponsor indoor track and field.
