COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Savannah State men's and women's indoor track and field teams returned to Columbia this weekend for the 2020 Carolina Challenge, hosted by the University of South Carolina.

Several Tigers and Lady Tigers bested their own efforts this weekend, earning strong finishes amongst the top tier of collegiate track and field athletes. Â

Out front for the Tigers was
Ny'em Bozeman, who doubles at Savannah State as a defensive back for the football program. Bozeman finished in second place in the men's high jump recording a 1.93 meter jump, an improvement on his 1.88m effort at the Gamecock Invite earlier this month.

Elsewhere on the field, Savannah State newcomer Ibsan Muhammad led the Tigers in shot put, with a 10.78 meter throw and in the weight throw with a 9.10m toss.

On the track, long distance runner Suhieb Mohamed improved on his last efforts in the 1 mile run, finishing with a 4:40.14—trimming down on his 4:41.38 time at the Gamecock Invite earlier this month. Mohamed recorded a 16:05.43 in the 5000 meter run as well.

In the 60 meter dash, Bozeman led SSU with a 7.37 followed by
Eric Jackson (7.55). In the 400 meter dash,
Andre Valcin ran a 49.80, finishing in the middle of the pack.
Erik Roberts ran a 2:09.67 in the 800 meter run and Darryl Witlz ran a 8.43 in the 60 meter hurdles for SSU.

For the Lady Tigers, Jahvene Walder again led SSU with a fourth place finish in the high jump, recording a 1.60 meter effort, tying both of efforts in the event earlier this season. Toni Pellington finished close behind her teammate with a 1.50m jump.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Walder finished in the middle of the pack with a 9.61—an improvement on her 9.67 at the Gamecock Invite in January. Jaylen Sewell ran a 10.58 in the same event.

Corta Washington ran a 7.97 in the 60 meter dash to finish in 20
th place, followed by Sadrea Mabry (8.26). Washington improved on her 200 meter dash efforts with a 26.45 this weekend. She ran a 26.52 in her last outing. Mabry followed her in the same event with a time of 27.48. Mabry recorded a 5.17 meter jump in the long jump event later in the day.

Jasmine Williams ran a 1:09.39 in the 400 meter dash, while Simone Johnson finished the 800 meter run with a 2:29.56 followed by Karen Perez (2:36.32). Perez ran a 6:02.43 in the 1 mile run, as well.

Both teams return to the track in Columbia on Feb. 7 for the USC Open to conclude the indoor track and field season.

Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams open the outdoor season—a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) sponsored sport—with three home meets.

The Savannah State Eyeopener will open the season on Feb. 22, followed by the Savannah State Tiger Relays on Feb. 29 and the Savannah State Orange & Blue on March 7. All three home meets began at 11 a.m. at Theodore A. Wright Stadium. All events are free to the public.
