Â
SCOUTING REPORT
GAME ONE
Coming off a tough loss to the best team in the league on Saturday, Savannah State women's basketball looks to continue their winning season and notch into second place in the SIAC East tonight against Paine College.
Â
Benedict handed the Lady Tigers a rough loss, but there were still notable marks for SSU. Freshman
Amari Heard scored a career-high 20 points to lead the entire field. She added 9 rebounds to her effort on Saturday. Heard has recorded four double-doubles in her debut season and is averaging almost as many points as rebounds this season.
Â
Savannah State has the top scoring offense in the SIAC, averaging 77.6 points a game. SSU sophomore
Le'Andrea Gillis continues to lead the SIAC and the Lady Tigers, averaging 20.8 points a game. She's followed in the SSU season stats by
Azhana Maxwell who's averaging 14.4 points a game, and
Ta'Kyla Austin (13.3).
Alexus Bryant, leads the Lady Tigers and the SIAC on defense, averaging 10.9 rebounds a game.
Â
The Lions enter Monday's contest off a big 76-62 win over Albany State. They are currently in second place in the SIAC East with a 5-4 conference record, trailing the 8-1 Benedict Tigers. They are led by Archie Keondra, who's averaging 16 points a game.
Â
GAME TWO
Savannah State men's basketball returns to action after a thrilling double-overtime win against Benedict College on Saturday.
Â
After a rough six-game losing streak to start the season, the Tigers are on a hot streak currently. They've won their last three games—including a 72-59 blow out of the top-rated Clark Atlanta on the road last Monday.
Â
The Tigers will look for their fifth conference win tonight against Paine College. They trail Morehouse (6-5), Clark Atlanta (7-3) and Albany State (8-3) in the SIAC East Division standings.
Â
The key to SSU's win streak has been a group of four top scorers. As a team, SSU has the third best scoring offense in the conference.
Adrian Bonds is third in scoring in the SIAC individually, and leads the Tigers this season, averaging 19.7 points a game.
Â
After only five games this season,
Trey DeLoach is making his presence known, averaging 15.2 points a game including a season-high 25 against Benedict.
Zion Williams, who put up 14 against Benedict, is averaging 12.4 points over his eight games played this season.
Â
True freshman
Marcus Scott is increasingly becoming the highlight of the Tiger offense, however. Scott drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer on Saturday to send the game into overtime and ended the game with a career-high 29 points to lead the entire field. He's averaging 14.7 points a game, and shooting 43% from the field.
Â
Paine enters Monday's game off a 66-61 win over Morehouse last Monday which broke a four-game losing streak for the Lions. It was their second conference win of the season and their second win overall. They sit in last place in the SIAC East Division currently.
