BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Savannah State men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2020 season on Saturday at the University of Alabama Birmingham Vulcan Invite.
Savannah State has performed well historically at the UAB Vulcan Invite. Alumni
Cameron Hall still holds the invite record for the men's 60-meter hurdles. Hall finished with a 7.77 on Jan. 14, 2017 to set the course record.
A handful of Tigers had strong outings in the opening meet of the season. Returner
Andre Valcin led SSU on the track with a 4th place finish in the men's 400-meter dash, running a 49.66.
Narhmartey Djangmah finished 10th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.06. Suhieb Mohamed finished 24th with a time of 2:09.12 in the same race, followed by
Erik Roberts, who finished with a time of 2:14.49. Mohamed also ran a 4:51.48 in the men's 1-mile race.
In the men's high jump,
Ny'em Bozeman, who doubles as a defensive back for Savannah State football, finished 12th with a jump of 1.86 meters.
For the Lady Tigers, Danielle Chambers led SSU on the track with a 9th place finish in the 400-meter dash, running a 59.78. Chambers also finished 9th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.04 after qualifying with a 26.03. Corta Washington was right behind her in the 200 dash with a time of 26.25.
Kayla Chance finished 30th in the 1-mile run with a time of 6:04:67. Karen Perez finished right behind her with a time of 6:15.14. Simone Johnson ran a 2:34.27 in the women's 800-meter run, finishing in the middle of the pack.
On the field, Jahvene Walder led the Lady Tigers, finishing 5th in the women's high jump with a 1.60-meter jump. Jaylen Simone finished 11th in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.15 meters. Toni Pellington finished 17th with a distance of 4.93m in the same competition.
Savannah State continues the indoor season with the University of South Carolina Gamecock Open Invite on Jan. 17.
Indoor track and field is not part of The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's lineup. Savannah State will, however, compete for the SIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship later this year.
