Savannah, GA:  On January 28-29, 2019 at King Frazier Student Center and Tiger Arena the Savannah State University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) partnered with Project Life Movement to help save the lives of patients suffering from sickle cell disease and other blood-related cancers.

Project Life Movement is a national collegiate program committed to curing blood - related diseases and saving lives by registering volunteers for stem cell and bone marrow donation with a simple cheek swab.

The goal of the event was to educate the student body on the importance of building the global stem cell/ marrow registry. Project Life Movement and the SAAC leaders also wanted to demystify the stem cell donation process.  According to SAAC President, Kanani Lodge, "Working with Project Life Movement this past week has been a fantastic experience. Having the opportunity to not only educate but to personally recruit 75 Savannah State students to join the global bone marrow registry in only two days is outstanding. We are looking forward to developing a lasting partnership with Project Life Movement."

"It was an amazing time having the opportunity to work with the SAAC leaders to help educate their fellow students," stated Project Life Movement Campus Coordinator, Dorian Edwards. Dorian continued by saying, "We shared with the students that when a person is looking for a donor, they are facing a life-threatening situation. A transplant is the last attempt at being able to save someone's life.  It was our goal to eliminate the "painful" misconceptions that people believe comes with being a donor. We want to swab healthy students to build the registry, so everyone has a chance to find their miracle match. During our time on campus, we registered 75 new potential life-saving donors."

This awareness event is one of the many events that the Tiger student athletes coordinate throughout the academic year. The role of the SAAC is to enhance the total student-athlete experience and community service plays a major role.

Project Life Movement is connected to Savannah State University through a relationship with the MEAC athletic conference. Project Life Movement partners with collegiate SAAC chapters across the country to build the global registry by educating and empowering students by hosting stem cell/ marrow education events on their respective campuses.
