ATLANTA, GA. – Savannah State closes out a five-game road swing this week against Clark Atlanta and returns to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) action.

SSU enters the SIAC matchup with the Panthers 2-0 in conference play after beating Benedict College and Morehouse on the road.

The Tigers dropped back-to-back road games to NCAA Division-I FCS programs Charleston Southern and Alcorn State in their last two outings. SSU came close to a victory against Charleston Southern, leading the Buccaneers 16-7 into the half.

Savannah State and Clark Atlanta's rivalry goes back several decades, beginning with their first matchup in 1956 when they were known as Clark College and Savannah State College.

From 1956 to 1999 SSU and Clark played each other every year with the exception of 1991. When the Tigers elevated to Division I in 2000, the longstanding annual game ended. They last met in 2008. SSU won that game 17-14.

This will be the 46th meeting of Savannah State and Clark Atlanta. SSU leads the overall series 25-18-1. The Tigers longest win streak over Clark Atlanta is 12-0, running from 1982-1994.

Tiger bites:

LEG POWER

SSU senior kicker Giovanni Lugo is currently being scouted by several NFL teams and has been nearly perfect this season on field goal attempts, hitting 5-of-6, putting him at the top of the SIAC stats.

SNIPER SQUAD

SSU has one of the top defenses in the SIAC this year. They're tied with Central State for most interceptions (7), and lead in scoring with two touchdowns. They're third in sacks with 14.

BACK TO CAU

The last time SSU played in Panther Stadium was in 2008. It was also the last time the two teams met. SSU won the game 17-14 thanks to a 37-yard field goal by Derek Williams with 1:09 left in the fourth quarter. CAU had a chance to send the game into overtime but Henry Boynton missed a 37-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining.

COMMON OPPONENTS

Savannah State and Clark Atlanta have four common opponents: Fort Valley State, Albany State, Benedict and Morehouse.
