SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State men's and women's basketball teams will try to get back on track when they host the Bulldogs of South Carolina State on January 26 at Tiger Arena.
The women's game tips off at 4 p.m. while the men's contest will follow around 6 p.m.
Ironically, all four squads enter their games coming off losses to Norfolk State.
The SSU women fell to Norfolk State 78-42 on January 19 while the Spartans topped South Carolina State 57-50 on Jan. 21. The NSU men rallied to beat Savannah State 82-76 on Jan. 19 and then got past SCSU 74-69 on Jan. 21.
The Savannah State Lady Tigers are 4-9 overall and are .500 in conference play with a 2-2 record.Â
Freshman
Myasia Jones is averaging 16.5 points and game while sophomore Heniaya Moten scores 10.6 points a game.
Alexxus Sowell tops the team in rebounds with 7.6 per outing.
Jacquece Alston leads the MEAC in steals, averaging 3.7 per game while Jones is second at 2.7 and Moton is fourth with 2.2
Alexus Bryant is second in blocks with 2.3 per game.
Savannah State lead the conference in blocks (4.9), steals (14.2) and turnover margin (+4.23) while they are second in scoring (65.8) and offensive rebounds (17.3). SSU is third in overall rebounds (41.1).
South Carolina State (9-9, 2-3 MEAC) has a trio of players who average in double figures in Taylor Brown (13.7), Rhein Beamon (10.6) and Kemoni Jenkins (10.5). Brown also averages 8.9 rebounds per game.
The SSU men and the Bulldogs both have lost their past two games.
Savannah State (4-14, 1-3 MEAC) is led by juniors Daquan Dotson and
Zach Sellers who contributed 13.1 and 11.9 points per game respectively. Sellers adds 4.9 assists per game while
Tyrell Harper chips in a team-leading 6.6 rebounds per contest.
As a team, the Tigers lead the MEAC in made 3-pointers (211) and offensive rebounds (13.4). SSU is second in the conference in scoring (76.3), rebounds (39.5), assists (15.2) and steals (7.6).
The Bulldogs (4-17, 2-3 MEAC) offense is anchored by 6-foot-8 junior Damni Applewhite who averages 17.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. Janai Raynor-Powell scores 10.1 points per game.
