Softball Begins MEAC Championship Wednesday

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team (13-21) begins the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference as the No. 3 seed from the southern division this week in a double elimination format in Ormond Beach, Fla.
 
The Lady Tigers start with No. 2 seed from the northern division Hampton University Wednesday at 3 p.m.  The winner moves on to play Thursday at 3 p.m. against the winner of No. 1 southern division Bethune-Cookman University and No. 4 northern division Coppin State University, while the loser faces the loser of BCU-CSU Thursday at noon.
 
The Lady Tigers are led by senior center fielder Brianna Harris with a .404 (46-for-114) batting average, while junior third baseman Cortni Jones has a .394 (37-for-94) batting average and junior first baseman Elizabeth Humes has a .337 (30-for-89) batting average.
 
On the mound, freshman pitcher Tanisha Williams has a 4-3 record with a 2.89 ERA and 20 strikeouts, while senior pitcher Amanda Hallman has a 7-8 record with a 3.89 ERA and 68 strikeouts.
 
As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .270 (239-for-884) with 154 runs scored, 39 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs and 133 RBIs, while on the mound, SSU is sporting a 4.65 ERA while striking out 121 batters.
 
Hampton and Delaware State entered last weekend tied for second place in the northern division, but the Pirates won the first two games 2-1 and 7-3 to receive the No. 2 seed, while the Hornets won the final game 8-2 to receive the No. 3 seed.
 
The Pirates are led by Dasha Hill with a .387 (55-for-142) batting average and Alana VanDenburg with a .330 (33-for-100) batting average.  On the mound, Allyson Babinsack has a 12-14 record and a 2.61 ERA with 741strikeouts.
 
As team, HU is hitting .272 (326-for-1199) with 350 doubles, five home runs, 134 RBIs and 167 runs scored, while on the mound, the Pirates have a 3.72 ERA with three saves and 146 strikeouts.
