SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University head women's tennis coach Carolina Lainez and head women's volleyball coach Edric Poitier has been selected to participate in the United States Marines Corps Leadership Coaches Workshop at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Va.

The Coaches Workshop is a three-day (May 17-19) intensive leadership workshop designated to teach coaches from across the nation Marine Corps small unit leadership (tactics, techniques and procedures).  To date, more than 75 coaches have participated in the Coaches Workshop program across different sports including: basketball, baseball, football, soccer, tennis, volleyball and golf.

The event allows coaches to get a small taste of what it takes to become a Marine Corps Officer and to develop a culture of leadership within their teams.

Both Lainez and Poitier came to Savannah State during the summer of 2016 and have made big strides in their programs this season.

The women's tennis team won three matches last season, including back-to-back wins.  The 6-1 win against Norfolk State University was the first win since 2014 and the 5-2 win against North Carolina Central University was the first conference win since 2014.

The volleyball team won four matches last season, the most since 2015 and started the season 2-1, including winning back-to-back matches.  The four Division I wins are the most in school history.
