SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team beings the 2018 season hosting the Tiger Classic this weekend at the Lady Tiger Softball Field.
The tournament starts with a doubleheader Friday between the Lady Tigers and Norfolk State University, who is also beginning the season this weekend, at 1 and 4 p.m., followed by three games Saturday.
Norfolk State and South Carolina State University kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by SSU and SCSU at 1 p.m. and SSU and NSU at 4 p.m. The tournament concludes Sunday with a SCSU and NSU doubleheader at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Last season, the Lady Tigers are looking to replace
Alexis Singleton, who led the team with a .374 batting average, but returns
Brianna Harris, who recorded a .266 batting average and
Shelby Eccles, who recorded a .241 batting average. On the mound,
Amanda Hallman and
Faith Dickerson both return, while the team lost
Amanda McDowell.
Last season, Norfolk State went 12-24 overall, including a 5-13 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The Spartans were led by Devon Bitler with a .351 batting average and Jaylene Pryor with a .293 batting average. On the mound, Hunter Halford led with a 7-9 record and a 3.68 ERA, while Mega Przelawski added a 5-15 record and a 5.18 ERA.
South Carolina State lost the only game of the season to North Dakota 9-0 last Sunday. Jada Richardson went 2-for-2 collecting the only two hits for the Bulldogs in the game, while Shana Abram picked up the loss giving up nine earned runs in 5.0 innings with five strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers travels south to Orlando, Fla., for the Citrus Classic next weekend. SSU faces Morgan State University at 10 a.m. and Lehigh University at 12:30 p.m. Friday, followed by Duke University at 10 a.m. and Purdue University at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Tigers conclude the tournament Sunday with a matchup against Czech Republic at 11:30 a.m.
