DOVER, Del.- Participating in their last Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships, the Savannah State men's cross country team finished second with 86 points. The event was held at the Delaware State Outreach & Research Center.
It was the program's best finish since placing fifth at the 2016 meet. SSU earned a sixth place finish last year.
Abbas Abbkar and Suhieb Mohamed both earned all conference honors for their performance as top 15 finishers.
Out of 72 participants, Abbkar finished ninth with a time of 28:01.3 while Mohamed placed 12th after being timed at 28:12.40.
Since joining the MEAC, no Savannah State runner has placed higher than 17th ( Reuben Isreal-McBee in 2012).
Rounding out the SSU runners were
Sahlu Atakilti,
Cameron Pack and
Terrance Sessoms.
Atakilti was 16th with a time of 28:41.30, Pack placed 23rd with a run of 29:30.00 and Sessoms recorded a time of 29:47.30 to finish 26th.
North Carolina A&T won the men's division with 51 points, followed by SSU, Bethune-Cookman (89), Maryland-Eastern Shore (90) and Norfolk State (118) to round out the top five.
Carlin Berryhill of Bethune-Cookman was the individual winner with a time of 26:39.90.
The Savannah State women finished 11 after tallying 325 points.
The 5k race drew 75 runners.
Yamia Cystrunk was the top runner for SSU, finishing 57th with a time of 24:34.89.
Jaylen Sewell was 68th with a time of 26:56.92 while Carlandra Jones was shortly behind Sewell in 71st place with a time of 27:46.75.
Danielle Chambers (73rd) and
Autumn Brown (74th) round out the Savannah State runners with times of 30:31.48 and 30:42.21 respectively.
SSU's best finish was 10th at the 2015 MEAC Championships. The Lady Tigers placed 12th last season.
Florida A&M captured the women's race with 43 points followed by Norfolk State (44), North Carolina A&T (117), Maryland-Eastern Shore (123) and Howard (130) to round out the top five.
Martha Bissah of Norfolk State defended her individual crown, turning in an 18:02.31 on the soggy, chilly course.
