GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore
LaRon James of the Savannah State University men's field team set the school record and won the long jump with a jump of 7.53 meters (24-8.5) on day two of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship, while freshman
Abbas Abbkar of the men's track team set the school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.39 in the preliminary round to place fifth and to qualify for the finals.
James beat his previous school record, set earlier this season, of 7.43 meters (24-4.5) set at the Weems-Baskin Invitational on March 24, while Abbkar beat his previous school record, set earlier this season, of 1:52.52 set at the Gamecock Invitational on April 16.
Following James first place finish was junior
Malik Franklin's second place finish with a jump of 7.39 meters (24-3), while freshman Konin Assinzo finished 14
th in the hammer throw with a throw of 29.61 meters (97-2).
On the women's track team, sophomore
Tyneshia Quarterman qualified for the finals in the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.54 in the preliminary round.
On the women's field team, sophomore
Faith Shears finished 12
th in the hammer throw with a throw of 40.07 meters (131-5).
Other men's track results include freshman
Isaiah McKisson's 12
th place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.02, while sophomore
Andre Houser-Cross finished 17
th in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97 and junior
Donterious Copeland finished 15
th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.42.
The men's track and field team ranks eighth with 18 points, three behind seventh place of South Carolina State University.
The final day of the MEAC Championship finishes Saturday.
