Softball Travels To Florida for the “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament This Weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University softball team continues its season traveling to Boca Raton, Fla., for the "Strike-Out Cancer" Tournament this weekend.
 
The Lady Tigers face St. John's University (1-3) at 9 a.m. and Syracuse University (3-2) at 1:30 p.m. Friday, followed by a single game Saturday with the University of Tulsa (1-4) at 11:15 a.m. and two games on Sunday with the University of Toledo (1-4) at 11:15 a.m. and host Florida Atlantic University (4-2) at 1:30 p.m.
 
Freshman first baseman Ashleigh Dennis was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week as she batted .353 (6-for-17) with two runs scored, four RBIs, two homeruns with 19 putouts and two assists with no errors in seven games.
 
Sophomore third baseman Cortni Jones leads SSU with a .538 batting average (7-for-13), while junior second baseman Brianna Harris has a .333 (6-for-18) batting average.  On the mound, sophomore pitcher Faith Dickerson has a 0-3 record with a 12.60 ERA.  As a team, the Lady Tigers are hitting .230 with nine extra base hits and 18 runs scored and on the mound, has a 15.97 ERA with 21 strikeouts. 
 
St. John's opened the season going 1-3 last weekend, including two top-10 losses to No. 3 Florida (5-2) and No. 6 Michigan (12-2).  The Red Storm is led by Mattera Kaitlin with a .667 (6-for-9) batting average and Lauren Zick is batting .462 (6-for-13).  On the mound, McKenzie Murray has posted a 1-0 record with a 3.89 ERA, while Grace Kramer has a 0-2 record with a 6.22 ERA.  As a team, St. John's is batting .274 with five extra base hits and 13 runs scored and has a 4.91 ERA with 20 strikeouts.
 
Syracuse started the season going 3-2 in Athens, Ga., including losing twice to No. 12 Georgia (6-5 and 14-2).  The Orange are led by Sydney O'Hara with a .400 (6-for-15) batting average and has a 5.40 ERA, while Bryce Holmgren is batting .375 (6-for-16).  Alexa Romero has a 2-1 record with a 3.06 ERA.  As a team, the 'Cuse is batting .262 with 13 extra base hits and 26 runs scored and on the mound, has a 6.17 ERA with 29 strikeouts. 
 
Tulsa went 1-4 in the opening weekend, including two losses to No. 10 Arizona (10-2) and No. 21 Baylor (9-1).  The Golden Hurricane is led by Julia Hollingsworth with a .600 (9-for-15) batting average, while Tori Stafford is batting .455 (5-for-11).  On the mound, Emily Watson leads the team with a 1-2 record and with a 4.30 ERA, while Lexi Blevins has a 0-2 record and a 6.36 ERA.  As a team, TU is batting .295 with 10 extra base hits and 18 runs scored and on the mound, has a 5.48 ERA with 23 strikeouts. 
 
Toledo went 1-4 in the opening weekend winning against Nebraska-Omaha 17-5 for its only win of the season in Cedar Falls, Iowa.  The Rockets are led by Kaitlyn Cozy with a .500 (7-for-14) batting average, while Celeste Fidge is batting .467 (7-for-15).  On the mound, Heather Webb leads the team with a 1-0 record and a 7.71 ERA, while Alissa Noble has a 0-2 record with a 10.29 ERA.  As a team, the Rockets are hitting .307 with 16 extra base hits and 33 runs scored and on the mound, has a 10.30 ERA with 17 strikeouts.
 
Florida Atlantic, who started the weekend at No. 24, went 4-2 in the opening weekend and defeated MEAC opponent Bethune-Cookman University 15-0 in five innings.  The Owls are led by Emily Lochten and Amanda Peck with a .538 batting average (7-for-13) and on the mound, Kylee Hanson has a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and Amanda Wilson has a 0-2 record with a 4.82 ERA. 
 
The Lady Tigers return to Georgia with the Black and Orange Challenge in Macon from Feb. 24-26.  SSU faces Marist College at 1 p.m. and host Mercer University at 3:15 Friday, followed by Marist at 12:15 p.m. and Mercer at 4:45 p.m. Saturday and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne at 10 a.m. Sunday.
