SAVANNAH GA. – The Savannah State University men's and women's cross country teams will travel to Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center in Smyrna, Del. on Saturday, Oct. 28, for the 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country Championships.
The championships will begin with the women's 5K race at 9:45 a.m., with the men's 8k race beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Other teams competing include Florida A&M, Howard, Hampton, Maryland Eastern Shore, Norfolk, North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T, and Morgan State.
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, MEAC student-athletes will wear pink racing bibs and head coaches will wear pink ribbon pins during the championships. The MEAC encourages fans to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month also.
On Friday, Oct. 27, the MEAC will team up with Delaware State to host the third annual Power of the PINK 5k Run/Walk. The event supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Participants will receive a free T-shirt, with a $10 donation, and are encouraged to show their support by wearing pink attire.
Last year the men's team finished in fifth place overall, and the women's team finished in 13
th place. The men were led by
Sahlu Atakilti who finished 20
th with a time of 27:18.03, while the women were led by
Miara Elmore who posted finished with a time of 23:33.23 and finished in 68
th place.
Registration will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the DSU Wellness & Recreation Center, with the 5k scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to local breast cancer research organizations.
The 2017 MEAC Cross Country Championships are free and open to the public.
