SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team (6-13, 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) looks to continue its four-game winning streak as the Lady Tigers travel to the Nation's Capital to face Howard University (8-9, 4-1 MEAC) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers defeated Delaware State University 64-57 Monday. Senior guard
Rhianna Warren led SSU with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from the floor, including a 2-for-4 from the 3-point line, while senior center
Tiyonda Davis added her third double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds and 11 points and added three blocks and three steals. Senior guard
Kenyata Hendrix added 12 points and three assists, while graduate student Lauren "Gaby" Moss added 10 points, seven points and three assists.
Hendrix leads the team with 11.7 points per game, while Moss is averaging 10.9 points per game. Davis leads the team with 8.3 rebounds per game and with 3.5 blocks per game, and averages 6.4 points per game, while Edwards is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game and 5.2 points per game.
Warren has averaged 13.3 points per game in her last three games and has scored at least nine points in each of those games.
Davis ranks sixth in the MEAC in rebounds per game (8.3) and is second in blocks per game (3.5), which ranks fifth in the NCAA and ninth in the country with 63 blocks. In her career, the Athens, Ga., native holds the school record in the Division I era with 258 career blocks and with 868 career rebounds. She also ranks eighth with 792 career points and sixth with 342 career made field goals. Davis' 63 blocks this season ranks fifth in school history in a single season, five behind third place.
Hendrix, who was named the College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week Monday, holds the school record in the Division I era with 174 career made 3-pointers and is the third Lady Tiger to record 1,000-plus points with 1,106, which ranks second in school history, and ranks third with 386 made field goals, six made field goals to place second.
Howard has won six of the last seven games with the only loss to North Carolina A&T State University on Jan. 21 (63-55). The Bison is led by Te'Shya Heslip with 15.4 points per game and averages 4.8 rebounds per game, while Sydni Johnson averages 11.1 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game and Imani Bryant leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game and averages 6.9 points per game.
The Lady Tigers travel to Princess Anne, Md., to face University of Maryland Eastern Shore (8-8, 2-3 MEAC) Monday at 5:30 p.m.
