TICKETS: Click HereSAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (9-17, 6-9 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) hosts Florida A&M University (15-13, 9-6 MEAC) Thursday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena in the final home game of the season.
This season, the Lady Tigers and the Rattlers faced on the court in Tallahassee, Fla., with FAMU winning 59-39 on New Year's Day. Junior guard
Rhianna Warren led SSU with nine points and six rebounds, while junior forward
Jeremica Edwards added seven points and five boards.
For the Rattlers, Alicia McCray led the team with a game-high 15 points, while Olivia Antilla added 11 points and six rebounds in the first meeting.
After 26 games, the Lady Tigers are shooting .366 (520-for-1419) from the floor, including shooting .293 (106-for-362) from the 3-point line. SSU is averaging 52.4 points per game, 37.5 rebounds per game and have recorded 261 assists, 216 steals and 111 blocks. SSU is holding opponents to a .361 field goal percentage, which ranks first in the MEAC and 32
nd in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, ranks third in the MEAC averaging 4.3 blocks per game, which ranks 77
th in the NCAA and ranks fourth in the MEAC with 107 blocks, which ranks 101
st in the NCAA.
The Lady Tigers also ranks 87
th in the NCAA in holding opponents to a 59.7 points per game scoring average, which ranks fourth in the MEAC and 112
th in the NCAA in turnovers forced with 17.19, which ranks sixth in the MEAC.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix leads the team with 12.3 points per game, which ranks eight in the MEAC. Over the last 11 games, Hendrix is averaging 14.9 points per game on 58-for-153 (.379) shooting, including shooting 29-for-78 (.372) from the 3-point line, while averaging 4.1 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game.
The Carrollton, Ga., native has made 301 career field goals, which ranks her in seventh place in school history in the Division I era and needs 20 made field goals to move into sixth place. Hendrix ranks second in school history with 135 made 3-pointers in her career and needs 19 made 3-point field goals to move into first place and ranks second with 54 3-pointers made in a single season and needs two made 3-point field goals to move into first place. Hendrix also ranks seventh in school history with 849 career points and needs four points to move into sixth place.
Junior center
Tiyonda Davis leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the MEAC and with 2.69 blocks per game, which ranks third in the MEAC and 23
rd in the NCAA. Davis has recorded 70 blocks, which ranks third in the conference and 26
th in the NCAA and is averaging 6.7 points per game.
The Athens, Ga., already holds the school record in rebounds with 702 career boards and ranks second in blocked shots with 190 career blocks and needs 34 blocked shots to move into first place. The 70 blocks this season, ranks third most in school history in a single season and needs four blocked shots to move into second place.
Davis also ranks tied for eighth in made field goals with 295 and needs 12 points to crack into the top-10 in scoring. Davis has recorded 665 career points.
Over the last 13 games, Davis is averaging 9.3 points per game on 52-for-89 (.584) shooting with 10.8 rebounds per game and 3.1 blocks per game.
Edwards averages 6.9 points per game on 73-for-160 (.456) shooting from the floor with 4.3 rebounds per game, while junior guard
Rhianna Warren adds 6.4 points per game on 56-for-170 (.329) from the floor, including 23-for-80 (.288) from the 3-point line with 2.8 rebounds per game.
In conference play, Hendrix is leading the team with 13.5 points per game, which ranks ninth in the MEAC and averaging 4.0 rebounds per game and 2.4 assists per game, while Davis is leading the team with 10.2 rebounds per game, which leads the MEAC, and with 2.9 blocks per game, which ranks third in the conference and is averaging 8.3 points per game on 54-for-95 (.568) shooting, which ranks leads the MEAC.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C., in the final road game of the regular season. Edwards led the team with 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor, while Warren added 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, including 2-for-3 from the 3-point line. Davis just missed a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points, while Hendrix added eight points and a season-high seven rebounds.
Florida A&M have won 14 of its last 21 games, but fell to North Carolina A&T 70-66 last time out in Tallahassee, Fla. Olivia Antilla leads the Rattlers with 15.1 points per game and averages 4.3 rebounds per game, while Khadejra Young leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game and averages 14.4 points per game and Cedricka Sweeting averages 10.4 points per game.
As a team, the Rattlers are shooting 654-for-1721 (.380) overall and 151-for-530 (.285) from the 3-point line and is averaging 63.8 points per game and 38.1 rebounds per game with 243 assists, 48 blocks and 242 steals.
The Lady Tigers start postseason play with the MEAC Championship in Norfolk, Va., starting on Monday.
