TICKETS: Click HereSAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (8-16, 5-8 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) returns home to face South Carolina State University (11-13, 7-7 MEAC) in Tiger Arena Saturday at 4 p.m.
The teams meet earlier on the hardwood with the Lady Bulldogs coming away with a 56-43 win in Orangeburg, S.C., on Feb. 13. Junior forward
Jeremica Edwards led SSU with a game-high 13 points off the bench and added five rebounds, while junior center
Tiyonda Davis added a game-high 13 rebounds, six points and three blocks.
Jasmine Coleman led SCSU with 11 points and six rebounds against SSU, while Ashleigh Outler added nine points and Toni Grier added eight points and six rebounds.
The Lady Tigers shot 29.5 (18-for-61) percent from the floor, including 8.3 (1-for-12) from the 3-point line, while the Lady Bulldogs shot 41.7 (20-for-48) percent from the floor, including 21.4 (3-for-14) percent from the 3-point line.
After 24 games, the Lady Tigers are shooting .361 (472-for-1308) from the floor, including shooting .284 (95-for-334) from the 3-point line. SSU is averaging 51.6 points per game, 37.2 rebounds per game and have recorded 235 assists, 198 steals and 102 blocks. SSU is holding opponents to a .365 field goal percentage, which ranks first in the MEAC and 42
nd in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, ranks fourth in the MEAC averaging 4.3 blocks per game, which ranks 87
th in the NCAA and ranks third in the MEAC with 102 blocks, which ranks 110
th in the NCAA.
The Lady Tigers also ranks 102
nd in the NCAA in holding opponents to a 60.3 points per game scoring average, which ranks fourth in the MEAC and 92
nd in the NCAA in turnovers forced with 17.48, which ranks sixth in the MEAC.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix leads the team with 12.2 points per game, which ranks ninth in the MEAC. Over the last nine games, Hendrix is averaging 15.3 points per game on 49-for-134 (.366) shooting, including shooting 23-for-66 (.348) from the 3-point line, while averaging 3.6 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game.
The Carrollton, Ga., native has made 292 career field goals, which ranks her in eighth place in school history in the Division I era and needs four made field goals to move into seventh place. Hendrix ranks second in school history with 129 made 3-pointers in her career and needs 25 made 3-point field goals to move into first place and ranks tied for second with 48 3-pointers made in a single season and needs eight made field goals to move into first place. Hendrix also ranks seventh in school history with 823 career points and needs 30 points to move into sixth place.
Junior center
Tiyonda Davis leads the team with 8.1 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the MEAC and with 2.83 blocks per game, which ranks second in the MEAC and 18
th in the NCAA. Davis has recorded 65 blocks, which ranks second in the conference and 21
st in the NCAA and is averaging 6.5 points per game.
The Athens, Ga., native ranks second in school history with 185 career blocks and needs 39 blocked shots to move into first place and the 65 blocks this season, ranks fourth most in school history in a single season and needs three blocked shots to move into third place, which she set recorded 67 blocked shots last season. Davis also ranks second in school history with 679 career rebounds and needs six rebounds to move into first place.
Davis also ranks ninth in made field goals with 290 and trails teammate Hendrix by two made field goals and needs 28 points to crack into the top-10 in scoring. Davis has recorded 649 career points.
Over the last 11 games, Davis is averaging 9.5 points per game on 47-for-78 (.603) shooting with 10.6 rebounds per game and 3.2 blocks per game.
Junior forward
Jeremica Edwards averages 6.5 points per game on 62-for-142 (.437) shooting from the floor with 4.1 rebounds per game, while junior guard
Rhianna Warren adds 6.3 points per game on 50-for-154 (.325) from the floor, including 21-for-74 (.284) from the 3-point line with 2.8 rebounds per game.
In conference play, Hendrix is leading the team with 13.5 points per game, which ranks eighth in the MEAC and averaging 3.6 rebounds per game and 2.5 assists per game, while Davis is leading the team with 10.0 rebounds per game, which ranks second in the MEAC, and with 3.0 blocks per game, which ranks third in the conference and is averaging 9.0 points per game on 49-for-84 (.583) shooting, which ranks leads the MEAC.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers defeated Howard 69-64 by competing a fourth-quarter comeback win in Washington, D.C., last Saturday. SSU entered the final quarter down by six points and outscored the Bison 26-15 to take home the win. Davis recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 10 points, while Hendrix led SSU with 13 points and four rebounds and junior forward
Caprisha Treadwell added 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks in 17 minutes.
South Carolina State is 3-2 in the last five games with wins over Coppin State (67-63), SSU (56-43) and at Howard (65-63) with losses to Morgan State (62-56) and Maryland Eastern Shore (61-55). Brittany Drumgoole leads the Lady Bulldogs with 9.3 points per game and is averaging 3.6 rebounds per game, while Amber Howard is averaging 8.8 points per game and 2.1 rebounds per game and Jasmine Coleman leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game and is averaging 7.3 points per game.
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs are shooting 492-for-1405 (.350) overall and 119-for-396 (.301) from the 3-point line and is averaging 57.0 points per game and 38.8 rebounds per game with 255 assists, 90 blocks and 201 steals.
