SSU Cross Country Set to Compete at 2016 MEAC Championships

SAVANNAH, GA., - Savannah State University men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2016 MEAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championship on Saturday, October 29 at Delaware State University Outreach and Research Center in Smyrna, Del.

The championships will begin with the women's five-kilometer (5k) race at 9:45 a.m., followed by the men's eight-kilometer (8k) race at 10:30 a.m.

The men's team are coming off a 10^th place finish at the Sand Shark Invitational in Hardeeville, S.C. last Saturday.

Freshman Sahlu Atakilti led the men finishing in 30^th place overall with a time of 26:27.45, while freshman Cameron Pack was behind him coming in 46^th place with a time of 26:43.35.

In their last outing, the women finished fourth overall at the 5k Bulldog Duels in Orangeburg, S.C. on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Junior Miara Elmore led the women finishing in 10^th place with a time of 24:31.5, while freshman Danielle Derricho finished in 12^th place with a time of 24:47.5.

Other teams competing include Florida A&M, Maryland Eastern Shore, Coppin, Howard, Norfolk, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T, Hampton and Morgan State.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month, MEAC student-athletes will wear pink racing bibs and head coaches will wear pink ribbon pins during the championships. The MEAC encourages fans to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month also.

On Friday, Oct. 28, the MEAC will team up with DSU to host the second annual Power of PINK 5k Run/Walk. Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. at the DSU Wellness & Recreation Center, with the 5k scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to local breast cancer research organizations.
The 2016 MEAC Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships are free and open to the public.
