TICKETS: Click HereSAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (4-10, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) continues its season-high five-game homestand against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (3-12, 1-2 MEAC) in the 2015 MEAC title game rematch Saturday at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
Last season, the Lady Tigers defeated UMES 65-47 in Norfolk, Va., to capture the school's first women's basketball MEAC Championship and to receive their first trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament. During the regular season last season, the Lady Hawks defeated SSU 61-50 on Jan. 17 in Princess Anne, Md.
After 14 games, the Lady Tigers are shooting .353 (262-for-743) from the floor, including shooting .281 (56-for-199) from the 3-point line. SSU is averaging 49.6 points per game, 34.8 rebounds per game and have recorded 129 assists, 137 steals and 53 blocks. SSU is averaging 9.8 steals per game, which ranks first in the MEAC and 56
th in the NCAA.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix leads the Lady Tigers with 10.6 points per game and has recorded a .319 (51-for-160) shooting from the floor, including shooting .270 (24-for-89) from the 3-point line. The Carrollton, Ga., native recorded six points in a 57-39 win over North Carolina Central to move her into ninth place with 678 career points and needs 37 points to move into eighth place in school history in the Division I era.
Hendrix also recorded three made fields goals in the game to move into the top-10 in school history with 241 made field goals and trails teammate junior center
Tiyonda Davis by eight made field goals and ranks third in 3-point field goals made with 105.
Junior center
Tiyonda Davis leads the team with 6.5 rebounds per game and 2.6 blocks per set, which ranks first in the MEAC and 26
th in the NCAA. Her 30 blocked shots ranks second in the MEAC and 30
th in the NCAA. Davis is coming off a tremendous game leading the team in points (12), rebounds (9), blocked shots (7) and tied the team with two steals.
The Athens, Ga., native's nine rebounds moved her into third place in school history in the Division I era with 571 career rebounds and needs 37 rebounds to move into second place.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to N.C. A&T 69-59 after holding a three-point halftime lead in SSU's MEAC home opener Saturday in Tiger Arena. Hendrix led SSU with 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting, with five rebounds, while Frazier set a career-high with 14 points and Edwards added 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Davis led the team with seven rebounds and with four blocks, while Richardson added five rebounds and five points on 2-for-3 shooting.
UMES is on a seven-game losing streak, including a 77-69 overtime home loss to Morgan State last time out. The Lady Hawks last win came at North Carolina A&T State on Dec. 7, 56-50. UMES is shooting .338 (300-for-887), including .338 (72-for-287) behind the 3-point line and is averaging 54.9 points per game and 38.7 rebounds per game with 152 assists, 89 steals and 59 blocks.
The Lady Hawks are led by Moengaro Subritzky with 10.2 points and is averaging 5.1 rebounds, while Ciani Byrom is averaging 9.4 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game and TeAmber Burke is averaging 8.6 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game. Taryana Kelly is leading the team with 6.4 rebounds per game and is averaging 6.1 points per game.
The Lady Tigers finish their five-game homestand on Monday against Delaware State (4-11, 1-1 MEAC) at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
