TICKETS: Click HereSAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State University women's basketball team (3-10, 0-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) continues its season-high five-game homestand against North Carolina Central (2-11, 1-2 MEAC) Monday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
Last season, the Lady Tigers swept the two-game series with an 82-61 win in Durham, N.C., on Jan. 12 and with a 65-54 win in Tiger Arena on March 2.
After 13 games, the Lady Tigers are shooting .350 (218-for-628) from the floor, including shooting .293 (54-for-184) from the 3-point line. SSU is averaging 49.1 points per game, 34.4 rebounds per game and has recorded 114 assists, 124 steals and 46 blocks.
Junior guard
Kenyata Hendrix leads the Lady Tigers with 10.9 points per game and has recorded a .327 (48-for-147) shooting from the floor, including shooting .289 (24-for-83) from the 3-point line. The Carrollton, Ga., native needs five points to move into ninth place in school history in the Division I era. Hendrix has scored 672 career points and also ranks third in school history with 103 made 3-pointers.
Junior center
Tiyonda Davis leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game and 2.3 blocks per set, which ranks second in the MEAC. The Athens, Ga., native needs two rebounds to move into third most in school history in the Division I era. Davis has recorded 562 rebounds in her career.
A couple of Lady Tigers have been streaking in the last couple of games. Over the last two games, Hendrix is averaging 15.0 points per game on 10-for-25 (.400) shooting with 5.5 rebounds per game, 2.0 steals per game, 3.0 assists per game and 0.5 blocks per game, while sophomore forward
Tanease Richardson is averaging 8.0 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game and junior forward
Jeremica Edwards is averaging 11.0 points per game on 10-for-19 (.529) shooting with 1.5 rebounds per game.
Over the last three games, junior guard
Chelsea Frazier is averaging 12.7 points per game on 13-for-29 (.448) shooting, including 6-for-15 (.400) behind the 3-point line, while junior guard
Rhianna Warren is averaging 7.4 points per game on 13-for-37 (.351) shooting, including 7-for-21 (.333) from the 3-point line over her last four games and junior guard
Taylor-Ashley Shaw is averaging 3.8 rebounds per game over her last six games.
The last time out, the Lady Tigers fell to N.C. A&T 69-59 after holding a three-point halftime lead in SSU's MEAC home opener Saturday in Tiger Arena. Hendrix led SSU with 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting, with five rebounds, while Frazier set a career-high with 14 points and Edwards added 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Davis led the team with seven rebounds and with four blocks, while Richardson added five rebounds and five points on 2-for-3 shooting.
NCCU began the new year with a 66-61 win over Furman in Durham, N.C., but fell to South Carolina State 58-51 last time out in Orangeburg, S.C. The Lady Eagles are shooting .316 (238-for-753) from the floor, including .268 (44-for-164) from the 3-point line. NCCU is averaging 50.1 points per game, 39.9 rebounds per game and has recorded 118 assists, 96 steals and 22 blocks.
The Lady Eagles are led by Tisha Dixon with 10.7 points per game and with 7.4 rebounds per game, while Morgan Jones is averaging 10.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game.
The Lady Tigers continue their five-game homestand against Maryland Eastern Shore (3-11, 1-1 MEAC) Saturday at 4 p.m. on Tiger Arena.
