Softball Closes Out 2015 Season

ORMOND BEACH, Fla., May 8, 2015 – Savannah State softball closed out the 2015 campaign on Friday with their fourth game in the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Championship Tournament.

The Lady Tigers fell to Hampton University 4-7 in Game 12 of the double-elimination tournament. On Thursday, they beat Howard University 10-1, but fell to Florida A&M 3-9 in the day's second game. SSU beat North Carolina A&T State Friday morning 8-0 to keep their title hopes alive.

Savannah State ends the 2015 campaign with the fourth consecutive winning season. Jose Gonzalez, the 2015 MEAC Coach of the Year, concludes his eighth season with a 151-196 record. Gonzalez is 39-17 in the MEAC. The 2015 squad went on a program-high 14-game winning streak over the latter part of the season.

Gonzalez is the winningest coach in the program's history. This year, he led the Lady Tigers to their second MEAC Southern Division regular season title with a program-high 13-1 MEAC record.

Hampton used the long ball on Friday to beat SSU and advance into the semifinals of the tournament. They face Bethune-Cookman in the last game of the day for a chance to play defending MEAC Champion's Florida A&M on Saturday in the championship final.

Savannah State opened the scoring on Friday. In the top of the first, Alexis Singleton made it home on a single from Amanda Hallman to give SSU an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Hampton's Jada Fields homered to center, scoring Allyson Babinsack, to give Hampton a 2-1 lead. The Lady Tigers responded in the top of the third, tying up the game on a Hampton fielding error that saw Ama. Hallman score, after reaching on a double.

Hampton took a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the third behind four runs on four hits. Margaret Wilkins opened the scoring with a home run over the left field fence. Hampton would never again relinquish their lead.

The Lady Pirates added one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning, as SSU struggled to plate runs, stranding at total of four runners over the fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth, Ama. Hallman blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence scoring Singleton to cut Hampton's lead to 7-4. SSU stranded one runner on one hit in the seventh to end their season.

Babinsack earned her 15th pitching win of the season after 7.0 innings of work. She allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

Savannah native Ashley Eichenlaub was tagged with the pitching loss after 2.1 innings of work. She allowed six runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. In relief, Ama. Hallman pitched 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

SSU was led at the plate by Singleton and Ama. Hallman, who both went 3-for-4. Hampton was led by Fields who went 2-for-3 with three RBI.

As a team, SSU batted .317 on the season. They were led by MEAC Player of the Year Torrian Wright, who's led the nation (NCAA Division I) in batting average (.566), slugging percentage (1.229) and on-base percentage (.748) for four consecutive weeks.

Wright set a new school record for home runs in a single season and led the MEAC with 17 homers on the season. Amber Hallman trailed Wright in the MEAC stats with a career-high 13 home runs. She finished with a .419 batting average.

In four years of competition within the MEAC, SSU softball has earned two regular season titles and with them number one seeds. They have qualified for the tournament each year since the school joined the conference.
