Torrian Wright Named MEAC Player Of The Week

NORFOLK, Va., May 5, 2015 – Savannah State junior Torrian Wright was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week of May 3, the conference announced on Monday.
 
It is the second MEAC Player of the Week accolade Wright has earned this year. She was also named the MEAC Preseason Player of the Year for the 2015 season.
 
Wright recorded a .750 batting average (6-for-8) over a three-game sweep of South Carolina State this weekend in the Lady Tigers final games of the regular season. SSU sealed up the program's second MEAC Southern Division regular season title with the weekend's victories.
 
The junior first baseman recorded a double, a home run, five runs scored and three RBI in the series. Defensively, she recorded 33 put-outs and two assists. She set a new school record with her 17th home run of the season, breaking her previous school record of 16.
 
The McDonough, Ga. native has led all of NCAA Division I for four consecutive weeks in batting average (.584), on base percentage (.752) and slugging percentage (1.299). She leads the MEAC in home runs (17), and is nationally ranked third in home runs per game (.49), and fifth in RBI per game (1.40).
 
Delaware State's Tara Tursellino earned Pitcher of the Week honors and teammate Vanessa Washington was named Rookie of the Week.  
 
Savannah State softball will open the 2015 MEAC Championship Tournament on May 7 in Ormond Beach, Fla. as the No. 1 seed in the Southern Division.
