COLUMBIA, S.C.- Savannah State closed their three-game series with Benedict with a 9-0 win on Sunday at Tiger Field.
It was the third time this season that SSU has shut out an opponent.
Nia Fisher was the hero on the mound as she pitched a two-hitter while recording six strikeouts.
At the plate, Fisher and
Jayla Alexander both had doubles.
Alexander's double in the first inning scored
Neveah Ford for a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning,
Madison Starling-Martin and
Caleigh Powell both hit RBI singles to increase the SSU advantage to 3-0.
Starling-Martin hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth that scored Fisher.
SSU sent three runners home in the fifth.
Morgan Cole hit a RBI single to score
Phaedra Smith and Powell scored when Alexander reached base on an error by the third baseman. Cole scored on a passed ball for a 7-0 cushion.
The final two runs were scored in the top of the sixth when
Ambria Guye's single up the middle brought home
Carissa Ball and a ground-out by Fisher allowed Guye to cross home plate.
Powell had two hits on the day while Ford finished with two hits and two runs while drawing a pair of walks.
SSU (15-20, 11-10 SIAC) snapped a four-game losing skid with the win and will travel to St. Augustine, Florida on April 8 for a non-conference doubleheader with Flagler.
