Softball Ends Regular Season With Walk-Off Win

Box Score

SAVANNAH, Ga., May 3, 2015 – The Savannah State softball team celebrated senior day with a walk-off, 5-4 victory over South Carolina State in the final game of the regular season, earning the team's fourth consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series sweep.

After a doubleheader sweep of the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday, SSU sealed up the 2015 MEAC Southern Division regular season title. It was the second regular season title for the program; they won the title in the 2012 season, the program's first year of competition within the conference.

The Lady Tigers finish the regular season with their fourth consecutive winning season behind a 20-15 overall record and a program-high 13-1 MEAC record.
Senior's Amber Hallman, Kylie Tierce, Ariona Hagood and Destiny Webster were honored for their years playing in the blue and orange, but in Sunday's final game it was a freshman that propelled SSU to the win and kept a program-high 13-game winning streak alive.

The Lady Tigers held a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning, and looked to be cruising to yet another MEAC series sweep. However, the Lady Bulldogs kept fighting.
In the top of the seventh, Unique Whitehurst singled through the right side, scoring Tiara Lovejoy and Tamaya McQueary. Deanna Sullivan followed that with a two-run home run to tie the game up at four runs apiece.

Webster opened the seventh with a single to center. Tamara Jones pushed her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Alexis Singleton moved Webster to third with a sacrifice bunt as well. True freshman Brianna Harris, five pitches deep into the count, ended the game with a walk-off double to left that platted Webster.

SSU spread out 11 hits over seven innings. Hallman recorded her 13th home run of the season in the sixth inning. Hallman is ranked second in the MEAC in home runs on the season. She trails teammate Torrian Wright, who set a new school record this season with 17 home runs.

The Lady Tigers were led at the plate by Harris, Hallman, Wright and Webster, who all recorded two hits in the team's final regular season game.

Freshman Ashley Eichenlaub picked up her first series sweep, earning her 14th pitching win of the season after a full 7.0 innings of work. She allowed four earned runs on 10 hits. Eichenlaub pitched SSU to a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

At the end of the season, the Lady Tigers are led by the top batter in NCAA Division I softball, Wright. The MEAC Preseason Player of the Year leads D-I softball in batting average (.584), slugging percentage (1.299), and on-base percentage (.752). She's led in those categories for the final four consecutive weeks of the softball season.

Webster follows Wright with a .533 batting average. Hallman finishes the regular season with a .437, followed by Singleton (.352), and Amanda Hallman (.337).
The Lady Tigers are nationally ranked 10th in home runs per game, 54th in batting average, 17th in scoring, 18th in slugging percentage and 29th in on-base percentage.

SSU heads to the 2015 MEAC Softball Championship Tournament, scheduled for May 7-9 in Ormond Beach, Fla. with a No. 1 seed.

Last year, SSU dropped two games on day one of the tournament, ending their bid early. They reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2013; the deepest they've gotten in the annual battle for the conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
