Softball Claims MEAC Southern Division Title

SAVANNAH, Ga., May 2, 2015 – The Savannah State softball team claimed the program's second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division regular season title on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of South Carolina State on Lady Tiger Field in Savannah.
 
The Lady Tigers edged by the Lady Bulldogs 4-0 in game one, and followed that with a 10-1, five inning victory in game two to improve to 12-1 in conference play and seal up the title.
 
Savannah State softball won the program's first regular season title in 2012, its first year of competition within the conference. They will receive a No.1 seed into the 2015 MEAC Softball Championship Tournament, set for May 7-9 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
 
The Lady Tigers will conclude the 2015 regular season with the final game of the series with South Carolina State on Sunday at 12 p.m. Senior day ceremonies will precede the game.
 
Regardless of Sunday's outcome, SSU will claim its fourth consecutive winning season. They improved to 18-15 with Saturday's wins. Currently, the Lady Tigers are on a program-high 12-game MEAC win streak.
 
Some stellar defensive play from both teams in Saturday's opener led to a stalemate in the opening five innings. The Lady Tigers platted a single run in the first inning on an SCSU error. Over the subsequent five and a half innings, teams stranded a total of eight runners.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, Torrian Wright doubled to left-center, scoring Amber Hallman and earning the first RBI from either team in the game. Wright was later scored on a double from Tia Bolden. Kylie Tierce platted Bolden on a sacrifice fly to give SSU a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning.
 
Wright and Bolden led the Lady Tigers on the day, both going 2-for-3 from the plate. Wright continues to lead all of NCAA Division I softball in batting average (.581), slugging percentage (1.324), and on-base percentage (.754). The MEAC Preseason Player Of The Year has led all Division I batters for four consecutive weeks in the aforementioned categories.
 
The Lady Tigers defense went to work in the bottom of the frame, led by freshman pitcher Ashley Eichenlaub who forced three groundouts to earn her 12th pitching win of the season and her second shutout. Eichenlaub toed the rubber for a full 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
 
Game two did not see the same stalemate.  
 
Amb. Hallman was walked to reach in the bottom of the first. Wright scored her after going yard for the 17th time this season, setting a new school record and lifting the Lady Tigers to a 2-0 lead. Wright set the school record for home runs in a single season in her freshman debut with 16.
 
Amb. Hallman is second in the MEAC in home runs with a career-high 12 in her senior season. She trails only Wright.
 
SSU tacked on one more run in the second inning. The Lady Bulldogs got their only run of the day in the third inning. Tamaya McQueary singled down the left-field line, scoring Nicole Sanders.
 
The Lady Tigers responded with a massive third inning, scoring four runs on three hits. Bolden, Alexis Singleton and Antonette Smith all singled in the inning. SSU held a 7-1 lead into the fourth inning.
 
SSU platted three more runs on two hits in the fourth inning for the final score. In the fifth, SCSU stranded a single runner as Eichenlaub again forced three groundouts to earn her second win of the day.
 
The Savannah native pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. She improves to 13-8 on the season.
 
From the plate SSU was led by Singleton, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI in game two. Wright was 2-for-2 with two RBI.
