Men's and Women's Golf Teams Finish Second At FAMU Spring Invite

Neals and Rogers Tie For Second Place In Men’s Bracket

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.  – The Savannah State men's and women's golf teams finished second overall at the 2015 Florida A&M Spring Invitational this weekend.
 
The Tigers shot a two-round team score of 606 in the NCAA Division I men's bracket, which included five of the six Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) golf programs. Host Florida A&M won the tournament by six strokes, finishing with a team score of 600.
 
Savannah State women's golf finished second in the women's division. The Lady Tigers shot a two-round team score of 680 (338 and 342). Hampton won the women's division with a team score of 648 (326 and 322).
 
Two seniors led Savannah State men's golf in the tournament. Brandon Neals and Scott Rogers both shot 149 to tie for second place in the individual standings. Neals opened with a 77 on day one, and cut that by five-strokes, shooting a 72 to close out the tournament. Rogers opened with a 75, and improved to a 74 on day two.
 
Senior Travis Roe finished third in the overall standings with a two-day score of 150. He shot a 74 to open and closed with a 76. Newcomer's Devon Jakes and Christian Parker rounded out the Tigers team effort. Jakes shot a 158, while Parker finished with a 176.  
 
FAMU's Omari Whitmore won individual medalist honors with a two-round score of 146 (71 and 75). In the team field, North Carolina Central (628) finished third, followed by Maryland Eastern Shore (644) and Hampton (679).
 
Newcomer Sydney Woolfolk led the Lady Tigers, tying for third overall with a 164. Woolfolk opened with an 83 and improved in the second round, carding an 81. Rachele Orme followed Woolfolk with a 166 (83 and 82).
 
Senior Jocelyn Williams finished with a 174 (84 and 90), followed by Abigale Drew (177) and Cheyenne Willard (185).
 
Hampton's Cheryl Chua won individual medalist honors with a 156 (83 and 73).
 
Savannah State men's golf continues the season with the Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia next week. The Lady Tigers return home in late April to host a MEAC Showcase at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah.
