Lady Tigers Set New School Records At Tiger Twilight

Seniors Honored At Final Home Meet

SAVANNAH, Ga.  – Several Lady Tigers set new school records as Savannah State outdoor track and field hosted the Tiger Twilight, their final home meet of the season, on Wednesday.
 
Seniors Cameron Hall, Lemaar Shakir and Jaymi White were honored in a pre-match ceremony for their contributions to the program.
 
SSU newcomer Asea Gilmore tied the Division I school record last week in the 800 meter run with a 2:16.00. On her home track Wednesday, Gilmore won the event and broke the record with a 2:15.26.   
 
In the pole vault competition, Alysia Potts set a new personal record and broke her own Division I record with a 3.18m vault. Kourtney Sizemore also set a new personal record, and tied the school record, clearing the same height as Potts.
 
Senior Jaymi White won the long jump event with a distance of 5.68m. Teammate, and freshman Ravyn Mike finished second in the same event with a distance of 5.35m. Mia McLean finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.17m.
 
The Lady Tiger relay team of Gilmore, White, Miara Elmore and Mia McLean won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:11.34. Mike, White, Elmore and McLean finished third in the 4x100m with a time of 49.45.
 
Elmore ran a 1:01.70 in the 400m dash. Ashley Goss followed her teammate with a time of 1:06.91. Kacie Wimpye ran a 17.51 to finish 8th in the 100m hurdles.
 
In the shot put, dual-sport athletes Zariya Thomas, Autumn Session and Lynae Bryant finished in the middle of the pack. Thomas recorded an 8.01m throw, followed by Sessions (6.76m) and Lynae (6.57m). All three Lady Tigers also compete for SSU volleyball.
 
In the men's Division I bracket, Shakir and Hall led the Tigers on the track. Shakir ran a 53.26 to win the 400m hurdles event. Shakir holds the Division I school record (51.59) in the event.
 
Hall – a three-time Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) hurdles champion – won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.04.
 
The SSU relay team of Elijah West, Corey Jones, Michael Smith and Randolph Barratt won the 4x400m with a time of 3:31.33. Justin Leggett, Donterious Copeland, Hall and Shakir teamed up for the 4x100m relay, finishing 2nd with a time of 41.49.
 
Leggett finished 2nd in the 200m dash with a time of 22.02. Smith finished 6th in the 800m run with a time of 2:03.01. Jones finished 3rd in the 1500m run with a time of 4:10.53.
 
Hayes, the defending outdoor MEAC pole vault champion, recorded a vault of 4.42m. Hayes holds the Division I school record (4.75m) in the event.
 
Copeland won the triple jump event with a distance of 14.15m. He was followed closely by teammate Malik Franklin, who recorded a 14.12m jump. Franklin also finished 2nd in the long jump with a distance of 7.08m.
 
Derrick Akins won the javelin throw with a distance of 35.06m. Akins finished 4th in the discus throw with a distance of 43.87m. Dual-sport athlete Connor Christian finished 3rd in the shot put with a distance of 13.25m. Christian doubles as a defensive lineman for SSU football.

Savannah State continues the outdoor track and field season with a visit to the Florida Relays this weekend.
