Softball Sweeps MEAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Savannah State softball cruised to a doubleheader sweep of North Carolina A&T State on Saturday in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action.

SSU squeezed past the Lady Aggies in game one 7-6, and then rolled to a 19-3 five-inning, run-rule victory in game two, racking up a combined 20 hits on the day.

With the two wins, the Lady Tigers improve to 13-15 on the season and 7-1 in conference play. They are currently in first place in the MEAC Southern Division standings. Bethune-Cookman, who SSU will play at home later this month, is in second place with a 6-0 conference mark.

The Lady Tigers led off the day with a four run, two hit first inning in game one. Amber Hallman registered her second grand slam of the year, scoring slugger Torrian Wright who walked, younger sister Amanda Hallman who reached on a fielder's choice, and freshman Briana Harris who singled.

Amb. Hallman is second only to Wright in the MEAC in total home runs this season. On Saturday, she went yard twice for 11 total this season. Wright leads the conference with 15. The single-season school is 16, which Wright set in her freshman debut.

The Lady Aggies responded with single runs in the first and second innings. SSU added a single run in the fourth, behind Amb. Hallman's second home run of the day, for a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the frame.

NCAT cut that lead to one behind hits from Janika May, Alexiss Dominguez, Zebresha Blakeney and Alejandra Barcenas. The Lady Aggies outhit SSU 13-6 in game one.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to 7-4 in the top of the sixth. Amb. Hallman scored on an error, and Alexis Singleton platted Ariona Hagood – who was pinch running for – Ashley Eichenlaub – on a single to left field.

Looking to rally, Dominguez knocked a triple to right in the bottom of the seventh, platting two runs. With the tying run in scoring position, Ama. Hallman forced a groundout and a pop out to earn her first save of the season.

Eichenlaub earned the pitching win after 6.0 innings of work. She allowed four earned runs on 11 hits with two walks. Ama. Hallman allowed two earned runs on two hits with one walk.

Maiven McKnight was tagged with the loss after a complete game in the circle. She allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits with four walks and one strikeout.
Amb. Hallman led SSU from the plate, going 2-for-2 with five RBI on the day. Harris went 2-for-4 in the game.

Singleton opened game two with a double, and the Lady Tigers followed their leadoff hitter with one of the biggest innings of the year. SSU platted 11 runs on seven hits and one NCAT error. In the hitting fray, Wright registered her 15th home run of the year.

The Lady Aggies responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame. SSU added four more runs on two hits and a NCAT error in the second for a 15-2 lead into the third inning.

Both team's added a single run in the third. The Lady Tigers added three runs in the fourth and the fifth innings behind hits from Harris, Ama. Hallman, and Tamara Jones. Harris recorded her first career triple in the fifth.

Ama. Hallman backed by the stellar SSU defense sat the first three NCAT batters in the bottom of the fifth to end the game. The 16-point spread was the largest margin of win the Lady Tigers have earned this season.

Ama. Hallman picked up her fifth win of the season after 5.0 innings of work. She allowed three earned runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Singleton led SSU from the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. Harris, Ama. Hallman, and Wright each registered two hits on the day. Ama. Hallman recorded a season-high five RBI, leading the field in the category on the day.

As a team, SSU is batting .299 on the season. Wright leads in batting average (.545), followed by Amb. Hallman (.400), Singleton (.369), Kylie Tierce (.288) and Ama. Hallman (.277).

The Lady Tigers conclude the series with NCAT on Sunday with a single game. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. They return home next week with the year's final nonconference game, hosting Georgia Southern on April 15.
