Women’s Basketball Ends Regular Season With Rout Of Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State women's basketball team finished the 2014-15 regular season not only with a rout of Florida A&M, but with a program best Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record, and a first round bye in the 2015 MEAC Basketball Championship Tournament.
 
SSU closed out the second consecutive winning season with a 72-51 win in Tallahassee, ending this year's campaign with an 18-10 overall mark and a program best 13-3 conference mark. They are currently on a program best, eight game winning streak.
 
The Lady Tigers finish in second place in the MEAC standings behind the 14-2, five-time defending champion Hampton University, earning a first round bye in next week's tournament.
 
SSU is slated to play in Game 11 of the tournament on March 11 at 2:30 p.m. They play the winner of Game 7 between Morgan State and Coppin State; two teams they beat in the regular season. (click here for the full bracket)
 
Leading the Lady Tigers to victory in their final regular season game was a trio of veterans. Sophomore Tiyonda Davis recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Davis earned her first double-double in a 72-58 win over Morgan State on Feb. 7.
 
Leading the field in scoring was sophomore Kenyata Hendrix who racked up 18 points on the night. MEAC preseason player of the year Ezinne Kalu joined the two in double-digits with 17 points and led the field in steals with five.
 
The Lady Tigers lead the MEAC and are ranked third in the nation in steals per game, averaging 12.2 a game. Kalu leads the MEAC and is seventh nationally in steals. She finishes the regular season with a single season, career high 90 steals.
 
SSU opened Thursday's game with a 6-0 run behind four back-to-back points from Hendrix. Eight minutes into the game, Kalu lifted SSU to a 16-7 lead on a layup off a steal.
 
In full control of the game, SSU went up by double-digits behind a layup from Davis with 7:29 to play in the opening half. The Lady Tigers' lead would never again dip below double-digits again, as they cruised to victory.
 
Khaderja Young and Taneka Rubin led Florida A&M with 12 points each. The Lady Rattlers end the regular season with an 8-20 overall mark and a 5-11 conference record.
 
SSU shot 51.7 percent from the field on Thursday. It was only the third game of the season in which the Lady Tigers have managed a 50 percent clip or better; they won all three games.
 
The Lady Tigers outrebounded FAMU 44-33, and racked up nine steals. However, SSU did committed more turnovers (18) than the Lady Rattlers (14).
