Track and Field Sets New Records At UNF Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  – Several members of the Savannah State men's outdoor track and field team set new personal best records at the University of North Florida Spring Invitational this weekend, in Jacksonville, Florida.
 
SSU freshman Corey Jones won the 800 meter run with a new personal best time of 1:54.90. In the 400m dash, newcomer Elijah West set a new personal best of 51.96.
 
Brandon Davis finished 3rd in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 54.23. Teammate Lemaar Shakir won the event with a time of 52.84.
 
Justin Leggett had strong showings in both the 100m and 200m dashes. Leggett ran a 21.68 in the 200, finishing in 8th place, and a 10.89 in the 100 for a 12th place finish.
 
Connor Christian led the Tigers in the field. The dual sport athlete finished 3rd in the shot put with a throw of 13.69m. Christian finished 8th in the discus throw with a distance of 40.16m. Derrick Akins finished in 4th in the same event with throw of 42.92m.
 
Malik Franklin finished 3rd in the triple jump with a distance of 14.46m. In the same event, Donterious Copeland finished 8th with a jump of 13.94m. Franklin finished 7th in the long jump with a distance of 6.83m. Copeland followed with an 11th place finish and a distance of 6.63m.
 
On the women's side, Asea Gilmore got within 44ths of a second of the school record in the 400m hurdles. Gilmore finished 5th with a time of 2:16.44. Anntiontte Elam set the school record with a 2:16.00 in 2004.
 
Miara Elmore finished 18th with a 1:10.43 in the 400m hurdles. Senior Jaymi White ran a 15.62 in the 100m hurdles.
 
In the field, White finished 8th in the long jump with a distance of 5.56m. Mia McLean recorded a distance of 4.53m in the same event. In the triple jump Elmore recorded a 10.98m for 10th place, and Mclean finished in 12th with a 10.84m. Kortney Sizemore and Alysia Potts each recorded a distance of 2.90m in the pole vault competition.
 
Savannah State continues the outdoor season with the final home meet. The Tigers will host the Savannah State Twilight on April 1 at T.A. Wright Stadium. The first event is set to kick-off at 4 p.m. The meet is free and open to the public.
