Softball Drops Doubleheader To Mercer

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MACON, Ga. – Savannah State softball made the short trip to Macon on Saturday for a nonconference, twinbill with Mercer University, and despite some good work at the plate dropped both games to the Lady Bears.

In the opening game, Mercer's Kirsten Stevens pitched a stellar 7.0 innings. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with 11 strikeouts, in her team's 5-3 win over SSU.

Mercer opened the scoring in the second inning, platting three runs on five hits. The Lady Tigers responded in kind in the top of the third. Amber Hallman hit her 7th home run of the season, platting Alexis Singleton who reached on a single.

Into the bottom of the third, Mercer took a 5-2 lead behind two runs, a hit and two costly SSU errors. The Lady Tigers tacked on one run in the top of the fifth. Tia Bolden singled to left-center to score Molly Lillis who reached on a single. The score would hold through the final two innings.

SSU outhit Mercer 7-6 in the opening game. Singleton led the Lady Tigers from the plate, going 2-for-4.

Freshman Ashely Eichenlaub recorded her seventh loss of the year after 6.0 innings of work in the circle. She allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

SSU opened the scoring in the second game. In the first inning, Torrian Wright singled to left center, platting Singleton who also singled to reach. Mercer responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame on two hits.

Into the fourth inning the game remained tied up at one run. Mercer broke the stalemate in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double from Riley Carter.

The Lady Tigers cut Mercer's lead to 3-2 in the sixth inning. Singleton stole third base and proceeded to score on an error after reaching on a single.

Mercer, however, responded in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on five hits for a 7-2 lead. The score held as SSU failed to reach in the top of the seventh inning.

Amanda Hallman dropped her ninth appearance in the circle this year. In 5.1 innings of work, she allowed seven earned runs on nine hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Megan Biligri picked up her third win of the season after a complete game in the circle. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts.

Savannah State falls to 7-14 on the season. They open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play in Tallahassee, Florida on March 28 with a doubleheader against Florida A&M.
