Indoor Track and Field Led By Newcomers In USC Open

COLUMBIA, S.C.  – The Savannah State men's and women's track and field teams continued the 2015 season at the University of South Carolina Open #1 this weekend, where they were led by a handful of newcomers.
 
Freshman Corey Jones ran a 4:43.52 in the one mile run for a third place finish to lead the Tigers on the track. Micah Richards finished in ninth in the same event with a time of 4:58.62
 
In the 55 meter hurdles, senior Cameron Hall ran a 7.48 to finish in fifth place. In the preliminaries round of the same event, Lemaar Shakir ran a 7.94 and Randy Thomas ran an 8.03, to qualify for the finals.
 
Dual sport athlete Connor Christian (football, track & field) finished in fourth place in the shot put with a distance of 13.83 meters.
 
In the long jump event, Malik Franklin recorded a distance of 6.98m for a fifth place finish. Donterious Copeland had a jump of 6.24m to finish in eighth in the same event.
 
Derrick Akins finished seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 13.93m.
 
Newcomer Ashley Goss led the Lady Tigers on the track, finishing with a 1:13.86 for fourth place. In the one mile run, Asea Mayfield ran a 5:55.21 to finish in sixth place.
 
Jaymi White led SSU on the field, recording a distance of 5.42m in the long jump. Newcomer Ravyn Mike was right behind her teammate in fifth place with a distance of 5.25.
 
In the pole vault, Kortney Sizemore recorded a distance of 2.60m for a 10th place finish. Dual sport athlete Zariya Thomas (volleyball, track and field) had a throw of 7.42m in the shot put event.
 
Chantia Taylor, also a dual sport volleyball/track and field student-athlete, recorded a jump of 1.37m in the high jump event to finish in 11th.
 
Both Savannah State indoor track and field teams conclude the 2015 season at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championship on February 12 in Landover, Maryland.
