Softball Sweeps Howard To Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAVANNAH, Ga. -   The Savannah State softball team opened the 2015 season on Lady Tiger Field with a twinbill sweep of fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) school Howard University.

At the plate, SSU was stellar on the night, racking up 25 hits in both game including three home runs, three doubles and a triple.

In the opening game, SSU pounded out 13 hits, routing Howard with a 12-4, six inning win. After trailing for most of game two, the Lady Bison powered back for a lead, but SSU scrambled in the final two innings, earning an 8-7 win and the sweep.

Howard opened the scoring in the first inning of game one. Milan Poindexter singled to right, scoring Al'Asia Davis after she reached on a single.

Savannah State responded with six runs in the bottom of the inning behind three hits, and three costly Howard errors.

After a scoreless second inning, Howard registered three runs on two hits in the top of the third to cut SSU's lead to 6-4. The score remained the same until SSU went up 7-5 in the 5th behind a home run from Amanda Hallman.

SSU sealed up the rout in the 6th. Freshman Brianna Harris opened with a single and a steal, and then Amber Hallman scored her on a double.

MEAC preseason player of the year Torrian Wright recorded her first homer of the year with a searing long ball over the left field wall, plating Amb. Hallman.

Imani Gayle sealed up the game ending, mercy rule, win for SSU with a single up the middle that plated Tia Bolden who reached on a single, and Tamara Jones, who was pinch running for Ama. Hallman.

Ama. Hallman earned her first pitching win of the season after 6.0 innings of work. She allowed 7 hits on 4 runs (3 earned) and nine strikeouts. Alex Flynn was tapped with the loss for Howard after 5.2 innings in the circle. She allowed 12 runs (9 earned) on 12 hits with 5 strikeouts.

In game two, both teams went scoreless in the first inning. SSU opened the scoring in the second behind a single from Destiny Webster that scored Wright. Webster had a stellar outing, going 3-for-3 in game one and 2-for-3 in game two from the plate.

Howard responded with two runs on three hits in the third inning, but SSU was undeterred into the bottom half of the third.

Alexis Singleton opened with a single down the right field line, and Amb. Hallman followed it with a single to right. Wright singled to third and Ama. Hallman was walked, plating Singleton.

Gayle singled, to score Amb. Hallman. Later, Harris singled to left-center scoring Gayle. The Lady Tigers racked up four runs on five hits for a 5-2 lead into the 4th.

Howard wasn't finished though. In the fifth, they cut SSU's lead to 6-5 behind one hit and two costly SSU errors. After a scoreless bottom half from the Lady Tigers, Howard took the lead in the top of the 6th.

Janessa Flynn singled to left, plating Sade Estes who reached on a single. Flynn later scored on an error for the go-ahead run.

SSU trailed 6-7 into the bottom of the 6th. Wright led off, and was promptly walked. Jones entered the game to run for Wright. Ama. Hallman laid down a text book sacrifice bunt to move Jones to second. Jones found third on a passed ball and with only one out, SSU had the tying run in scoring position.

Gayle struck out swinging for the second out. Bolden entered the game as a pinch hitter and recorded the only triple of the night, blasting a ball down the right field line, scoring Jones to tie the game.

Webster entered the game as a pinch runner for Bolden, putting one of the team's fastest runners in scoring position. Again, the strategy worked for SSU as a Webster made it safely and easily home on a throwing error from the catcher, lifting the Lady Tigers to an 8-7 lead.

Only three outs from the sweep, the SSU defense went to work in the top of the 7th. A sacrifice bunt from Jasmine Gammons gave them the first out, but pushed Jenny Ly to second base after she reached on a single. Ly advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch.

SSU freshman Ashley "Brooke" Eichenlaub, in her college debut on the mound, responded to the pressure with a strikeout and forced pop up that stranded the tying run on third, and ended the game.

Eichenlaub, a Savannah, Ga. native and graduate of Savannah Christian, pitched a full 7.0 innings in her first career win. She allowed 7 runs (4 earned) on 9 hits with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Savannah State continues the season with the Panther Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., hosted by Georgia State. The five-game tournament will pit SSU against Alcorn State, Georgia Tech and Georgia State.

The Lady Tigers return home on February 25 to face the University of Georgia on Lady Tiger Field. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 3 p.m.

GAME NOTE: These games are not considered MEAC competition because the schools compete in different divisions within the conference
