SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State University women's basketball team begins the 2015-16 season against Columbia College (S.C.) on Friday at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
 
Before the start of the game, Savannah State will unveil two banners, one for the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and one for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Appearance.  SSU defeated Coppin State (66-52) in the quarterfinals, North Carolina A&T State (62-59) in the semifinals and Maryland Eastern Shore (65-47) in the championship game to capture its first MEAC Championship, but fell to No. 1 seed South Carolina 81-48 in the NCAA Tournament in Columbia, S.C., in the first round.
 
Last season, the Lady Tigers set a Division I school record with a 21-11 overall record and went 13-3 in the MEAC, the best record in the conference since the first year of completion in 2011-12 in school history.   
 
SSU led the MEAC last season in 3-point field goal percentage (.289) and steals (11.8 spg), while finishing second in scoring (63.6 ppg) and field goal percentage (.416). 
 
This season, the Lady Tigers were picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches and sports information directors behind North Carolina A&T State, Hampton and Maryland Eastern Shore. 
 
Junior Kenyata Hendrix was named on the first team preseason All-MEAC.  Last season, she led the team in 3-point field goals made (48), which ranked for the third most in school history for a single season and the most in school history in the Division I era. 
 
The Carrollton, Ga., native also led the team in 3-point field goal percentage (.281) and averaged 1.5 3-pointers made per game, which ranked eighth in the conference.  She was third on the team in scoring averaging 9.0 points per game.
 
The Lady Tigers have posted a 25-9 record in their season opener since the 1982-83 season and has won the last 11 openers.  SSU has posted a perfect 5-0 record against the Koalas since the 2008-09 season and won the last three season openers all against CC.
The Lady Tigers hosted cross town rival Armstrong State last week on Tuesday and defeated the Pirates 68-61 in the lone exhibition game this season.  Junior guard Rhianna Warren paced the Lady Tigers with 17 points, while junior transfer forward Jeremica Edwards recorded 16 points.  Edwards also led the Lady Tigers with six rebounds, followed by sophomore forward Shanikwa Buie
 
Through four games this season, the Koalas are 1-3 and face Voorhees Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at home before traveling to Savannah.  The Koalas are led by Azia Gibson with 16.8 points per game and with 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting .543 (19-for-35) from the field.  Amber Sherrill has added 12.0 points per game and 4.0 rebounds per game. 
 
The Lady Tigers start a three-game stretch against Southeastern Conference opponents starting with Auburn on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena and then travels to Gainesville, Fla., to face Florida on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. and travels to Skarksville, Miss., to face Mississippi State on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m.
